The key thing to remember is that martial arts styles are meant to fight and defend against other styles of martial arts. As such, the "best" style is often tied to the physical abilities of the user. That said, I believe of all those styles listed, boxing has the advantage. This is because boxers are world class athletes. Boxing is a sport that you can make a living at. Professional boxers train for upwards of twelve hours a day from the time they are very young children. Boxers are world champions and boxers are olympians. I'd take Floyd Mayweather in any kind of fight against anyone else in the world, one on one. |

I have to disagree with boxing. Mainly because of restrictions on it as a sport. A lot ofstyles that are used in sports have too many restrictions on it that would make them hard to use in an actual fight. |

What do you mean by best? Best at countering other types of martial arts, defending your self, a fight with no restrictions.... |

Your right I'm a murderer; i kill people with a smile on my face, my parents say "what a disgrace" "get outta my face"...yet I walk away...with a smile on my face "If tall guys have this mystical advantage in jumping, then why to the tallest players in the NBA have the lowest verticals? Depends what you meen by the best, But If you meen to defend yourself Boxing is pretty useless because I don't think your allowed to box out of training/matches. |

I've always like Hapkido... It seems like one of the better ones, after that, Jun Fan, Bruce Lee style. Although, I cannot do any martial arts whatever, those are just the two styles I find most cool to see. |

from talking to multiple martial artist instructors and stuff, what I've been able to gather, is that most forms of martial arts have somthing different to offer in defense or offense, the trick is knowing what dose what and being able to fight as if it's second nature. in fights between kick boxers and martial artist, I've heard that Kick boxers normally win. this is not because they train more, but because they have spent most their time actually fighting other people. it's the experience that allows you to win, combined with knowledge. I would have to assume that brazillian juijutsu combined with certian forms, styles and moves of various martial arts and experience in the ring or just fighting in general, would create the "best form" for an individual, but it's hard to say what the best overall form is. thats how I view it. |

There is really no such thing as a best martial art, most are equally effective. Some are easier to pick up. This is mainly about personal favorite. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear people say which is the best martial art is i.e; a guy Jiu-Jitsu beat a Sambo wrestler. That doesn't mean that Jiu-Jitsu is better than Sambo. It just means that the Jiu-Jitsu fighter was a better fighter. Boxing is basiclly the most straight forward martial art you can find. Think about it next time you're threatened. Semi-crouched stance, jab, jab, straight right. A combo could break a guys ribs, leave him knocked out. There are many forms of boxing that are useful in the streets, or may be street oriented; apart from traditional Greek Boxing you got yourself other branches in Muay Thai, Cambodian Boxing, and French Boxing just to name you an example. Each balanced differently, they're all good, they may universally used for both leisure and self defense.
I'll be honest, I never was much into Bruce Lee's style. I'm more of a slugger then again so it wouldnt' interest me.
You're statement about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very vague. I could easily say that a Boxer who adds foreign martial elemnts would be the best. Which is not true. He will be very well balanced, but that doesn't make his martial art the best. Another thing I'd like to add is that I find Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu very overrated in North American, largely thanks to the Gracie brothers. They fought during a time when the MMAs were not as organized and their style was unkown, grappling as a whole was on a much lower level. They'd go in the ring, lie on their backs and the match would end. Put Gracie in his prime against Frank Mir or GSP. The guy won't dominate. If you want to talk about the most useful Martial Art which can be used litterally out of the ring, it would be Krav Maga. This martial art can litterally kill people. And I'm not saying kill as in "well I am a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, I can kill you" I mean it is rarer than not to find in ring Krav Maga competitions. Krav Maga is a Martial Art that is descended by the Israeli army and is learnt by them to defend themselves above everything else and kill opposing threats. Edited by .Punxx, Jan 9 2009, 08:42 PM.

I've been told that Taekwondo is the least useful martial arts anyone can learn because it focuses primarily on kicks. It is weak against ground fighting and most kicks leave the person exposed to punches. I've watched Taekwondo fights on youtube vs. muay thai fighters, and taekwondo doesn't do too well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcoprF6_FOM Here is an example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2y8b5QgXOk&feature=related Taekwondo vs. wrestling Edited by AngelicHottieDS, Jan 9 2009, 09:23 PM.

Oh.. yeah I forgot about Taekwondo. I know I said there is no such thing as the best Martial Art, but I do think that Tae-Kwondo as a whole is very restrictrided, very exotic and very difficult to master. Let's just put it this way, it's not something I would ever want to get into. Also don't forget as we are exposed to more martial arts now a days, not many people may get involved in TKD as it is very difficult, so if less people get involved with it the prestige goes down. If the prestige goes down then we may not have very good TKD fighters. that's why TKD pretty much.. sucks. |

Punxx i agree with a lot of what you said and respect it as well. Personally i do amateur boxing and have my own style that has been branded more of a pro style as im aggressive, push forward and always attacking head and body with brutal hooks and uppercuts. I could fight pretty much anyone on the street and would not be restricted with rules. I think that capoiera would be very strange to fight as it is random and the other person is close to the ground and cartwheels with crazy kicks but looks like it would burn too much energy too quickly. Out of all of those style the one that i would not be too keen to fight would be a muay-thai as it is very brutal and uses all areas of the body as a dangerous weapon. It would be the most devastating an realistic to use in a fight. |

If you're a already boxer you'd pick up Muay Thai fairly quick. I started Muay Thai, but I liked Boxing better. So I'm pursued boxing, but I always incoporate Thai in my sparring or training sessions. |

Yeah id probably be better at muay thai because of the way im built and my power. But out that list i think muay thai is by far the most brutal and tough to face in a fight. ive sparred with guys who have moved onto boxing who used to do kick-boxing or muay thai. They tend to be very fast and powerful but lack stamina and throw a bit wild with their fists, however they are incredibly open to being punched in the head and body as they are too used to a more open stance (to block against kicks). I just take what they got, tough it out and apply pressure they tend to tire as im getting threw with my punches, consistently in their face, never giving them a break. |
