Look up the definition of Androids and Cyborgs. Take into consideration 16,17,18,19,20.

Why are we calling them Androids?

Here is the main difference I found*both from wiki
Quote:

Fictional cyborgs are portrayed as a synthesis of organic and synthetic parts, and frequently pose the question of difference between human and machine as one concerned with morality, free will, and empathy

Quote:

An android is a robot designed to look and act human

Basically I could compare an Android to the little (robot) boy from Artificial Intelligence and a cyborg to The Terminator. I've always compared the Androids of DBZ to Arnold's character very closely anyhow. I never knew there was a difference between the term cyborg and android until now though.

You're kind of missing the point of the topic.

19. The second wish of Dende's Dragonballs (the New Earth Dragonballs can grant two wishes instead of one), was made by Krillin to have the detonation devices to be removed from Android #17 and #18.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Androids 16 and 19 are androids based on the definitions I saw. Robots designed to resemble humans and retain some of their characteristics.

20 is a Cyborg as he is a human with mechanical enhancements. As for 17 and 18 I don't think it is ever truly stated as to how they were created. However, if it is true that they were humans that were mechanically enhanced, then they are also Cyborgs.

I guess Gero didn't want to have two different sets, so just called them Androids :P

I like to think of androids as human-like robots or cyborgs, since androids generally look human on the surface, and could have been assembled with the mind of a human who once lived. cyborgs are generally only partially mechanical, like mecha frezza, and typically are depicted in sci fi as looking mechanical on the outside.

I think since they were called androids that they must actually be androids but i don't see how they made it possible for 18 to have a kid.

Well all androids without a human base or any kind of biologigal parts involved are Androids and 17, 18 and Gero are Cyborgs but they are all called Jinzoningen which means Artifical Human
but to make it more aesy the are just called the Androids even though technically speaking three of the androids are cyborgs.

I always thought 18 wished to become human and that is why she could have kids.

Although it raises a question as to why where they allowed to feel pain if they where androids because pain is a weakness.

Once and for all, Krillin did wish for Android 18 to become a human, but Shenron said that wish was beyond his powers, so Krillin quickly thought of a new wish to make and that wish was to remove the internal bombs from Androids 18 and 17. Android 18 did not become a human.

Now about the android/cyborg discussion, I happen to have an answer for that. Bad translation. In almost all countries Android 18 is known as C-18, which is a short name for Cyborg 18.

They are indeed cyborgs, not androids.

Might not be bad translation, more someone thought "Android 18" sounded better in English than "Cyborg 18" or "C-18"

Well, either way, they changed her real name and nature to a different one with a slighty different meaning.
