Goku: Fat Buu's strength is unbelievable I don't think I could have won. From this we can assume Goku believed they were equal at least, so most probably believed he could beat him.

He probably just assumed that hes older, so he will die quicker and what if something were to happen to him that he couldnt control, like if he got sick, as he could have if Trunks didnt come back from the future with the medicine. Goku couldn't withstand SSJ3 in the living world with a real body. But when he fought Kid Buu, Elder Kai had already given Goku his life force so Goku was alive and kicking even on the world of the Kai's.

Internet Explorer Favourite Manga Naruto	Goku had a really good chance of beating fat buu on earth because he had enough energy but not enough time...and when he fought kid buu he had enough time but not enough energy. so yeah he definetly couldve beaten fat buu. He just didnt want to. it wouldnt have made good manga anyways if he ended it that fast anyways.
