I don't think America is overrated. It makes sense that some of you don't see anything spectacular about it, but you also have to consider the fact that you live in a great country as well. If you put yourself in the shoes of those countries which experience high levels of poverty and bad political systems you'd see why some people might think highly of it. |

Russia, Germany, Norway, Japan, China, Luxemburg and a few others all seem somewhat intresting.
The US economy isn't that great without a recession though really, huge national debt. The US doesn't even have monoploy laws do they? Not sure on that but in the US I think you can just keep expanding your company and stangle any compertition. |

This is a really good point. I don't know enough about America to be honest, and there's such a variety in America itself i'm sure it would be hard to come to an opinion anyway. |

We do. We have them and if two large companies wanted to combine, it would have to get approval from the government. |

America is a great country, but, it's not #1, at anything, I don't think. So, uh, put the big #1 foam finger down, guys. |

America has the #1 largest Military and Special defense force on the planet; only rivaled by Russia and maybe the Chinese. America has the #1 largest economy in the world; which until 2007 was very very powerful. As well as having the #1 most reserved currency in the world. The US is most probably the most powerful Capitalist federation in the world as well; not to mention a huge factor in providing all of Europe with Capitalism. The EU was invented; that says a big deal about Capitlism... where not to long ago, most countries in Europe were run by Socialist governments. Meaning the USA has ALOT of influence on the rest of the world; even if they don't put up their arms. at this moment of the new year; You guys ARE a superpower, the #1 most powerful country in the world, you have alot of reps all over the world, companies, military bases, allies.. other countries don't have as many. you guys are an empire. Although, we'll see what happens within the next 5- maybe 10 years.. should USA loose it's superpower status, who knows. Edited by .Punxx, Jan 1 2009, 06:07 PM.

I think that should be an interesting thing to track. US has always been thought to be #1 in a lot of areas, but I'd like to see if we stay in that place. A lot can change in 5 years... |

That's not very impressive. What about Standard of Living? The only thing I can think of that we WERE #1 at in terms of lifestyle was being the fattest, but, Australia ate a few more cheeseburgers than we did and beat us out. |

I hear there are some pretty poor things over there in the US in terms of living. I saw one documentry about how some people have to steal water because they can't afford it. I don't believe you have state owned housing either do you? I can't really speak much for US living standards since I've never lived there, maybe you could share your experiance with that. |

Some people are struggling with money, but a lot of it is from spending money that they don't have aka credit cards. The economy itself from my perspective isn't much different, but then again I'm speaking for just one state. I'm not sure what it is like elsewhere, but here the gas prices aren't ridiculously high anymore and food prices are still not much different than before so people can't really blame financial struggles on the economy. As for the water thing I find that hard to believe. Definately not saying it didn't happen, but just hard to believe because even water from the tap in my house is drinkable. |

The problem was, people couldn't pay their water bill and companies would shut their water off so they had to take the water illigally. That being one of the reasons, I can't remember the others. |

The gasses prices are so low because there's to much gas in circulation. Why is there to much gas in circulation? Because nobody has enough money to buy gas so less people are buying gas, therefore the price must get dropped.
I have a couple of things I want to address to you. So I may end up writing something long here. Let's start off small; SOL. I never said the Standard of Living was incredible, and you said America is not #1 at anything. Therefore, I told you otherwise. Let's face it, American economy is on the brink of collapse in my opinion right now. Call it a reccesion, call it a near depression; whatever you so choose it ain't good news. Blame it on the Housing sector.. we've had a slightly similiar situation here; yet on a much smaller scale. How is it not very Impressive to influence the rest of the world? I think it matters alot. You have more allies & friendly ties with many nations. Alright, I heard someone in this topic say that alot of other countries hate America, but that's more of a sarcastic remark if anything. it's safe to say that on paper alot of countries love America too. Speaking of which, other countries will lend you their resources. IE; American Warheads in Poland. Which at one time consisted of the Warsaw Pact. If a country that literally hated America at one time, is now their allies. That is something to be impressed by. Having the #2 largest active military infantry in the world (Alright then, you are #2 by manpower but then again compare the population of China, then compare the population of the USA). Shouldn't that make you impressed to say the least, that if anyone decides to attack America-... wait a minute? No opposing army ever attacked continental America. I'll say it again no opposing military ever had the balls to attack the USA's continental shelf (at least not in the modern era). You guys are just to powerful. Another thing, I can't stand the fact that you can only stop but say that America was the #1 most obese country in the world. Just to let you know USA is still fatter than Australia, although Australia is more obese. Anyways; Is that all you can think of? That doesn't make you much of an American does it? Not much more than I would expect from one who's taking the path to Socialism led by Barrack Obama. So the end this post; No. The USA are in no way overrated. When you guys are enjoying your economy to it's potential, people reffered to you as even the greatest standard of living nation in the world; they were right then. They rated you perfectly for every category that was hyped. Now that the economy is going downhill nobody is hyping about how great the American Standards of living are, although there is still other factors such as Political views and Military I guess you can add population in there too; which are still unharmed. Still not overhyped = not overrated. We know there's a problem in America, No one is under or over estimating anything. Maybe the day will come when things get worse, when that day comes if people are still hyping the fact that America is the land of oppurtuinity, they'd be over hyping that fact; thus. Overrated. though it hasn't happened yet. As of now, America is not over rated. |
