The question is the title. As far as standard living is concerned, is United States an overrated country? |

Okay, what? Overrated from whose perspective? Are you suggesting that Americans are too stuck up about their country that they ignore the fact that standard of living isn't as high as it should be? Standard of living isn't something that can be "overrated", it is a factual estimation. |

Overrated from an general perspective. Kyonko and I were debating on whether United States is a country full of positivity or negativity, which is what the debate consists of. Standard of living can be overrated. What others perceive outside the country may not be exact in the United States. |

Well anyone not from the US [aka. ME] (and anyone that isn't hater) would say it's a really nice country and, personally i like the US alot. But uh I suppose it is overrated it's just something different if you come from here. Majority of things are the same as over here, just on a bigger scale in the US. |

What country are you from blaze? It's kind of a hard question to answer, especially being from the US. I know there are a lot of Americans that it's the greatest country of them all but I don't know if I personally agree with that. Don't get me wrong, I think the US is great, but I haven't been to all the other countries to know. If anything I consider a lot of countries equal to us. Every country has their pros and cons I think so who am I to say "yes we are better"? Looking at the standard of living, I'd say it's higher than a majority of countries. However, most countries in Europe also have very high standards of living. I think the highest standard of living includes equality for all people (which we don't have yet until homosexuals are equal marriage wise), low poverty levels, health (we need nationalized health care, but Obama is working on that), and opportunity. |

What really makes me upset, is not necessarily whether or not the United states is overrated, but how it's suddenly progressing backwards. America was once the country of freedom and a sort of financial prosperity. Not anymore, especially after today's news. You say that America leads the way in scientific research? Well Christian influence has once again reared it's ugly head and caused America to fall behind in break-throughs of science. Todays news: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/20/health/research/20stemcell.html?bl&ex=1227243600&en=21630a148c19f857&ei=5087%0A
This follows the recent disapproval of government funded stem cell research, by our super Christian president GWB. This gives a prime example of how bad America really is, and basically shows us that America is no longer the leading greatness that it might have been a century ago. |

See thats the problem, Politics and religion should never get mixed up, but somehow they still do, because as you said Kotesu, government disapproved funding of the stem cell research |

Okay, I'm Australian myself, so you can say i can't really talk when i say this BUT gathering a lot of the information from many websites, cultural facts and documentaries on the country, The United States Of America has a lot of problems. I'm not going to jump to the conclusion and like Solid said mix up Politics and Religion. But the United States Of America, is VERY overrated, they care too much about themselves and their future, Economic Crisis...PING. Anyways the history of the United States is something that isn't that impressing. But yes i like the United States as its present. |

I think it is impressive when a country gains it's independence by beating one of the greatest colonial empires the world has ever seen, then paves it's way into history through a revolution, is a leading factor to why racism is not as popular today, won a war against the strong (yet declining) kingdom of Spain, and finally WW1 and WW2. Of course, thaat's only the early history. I think many histories of different countrys are impressive in a certain extent to say the least. Apart from today's economic crisis, in my lfetime the USA has had a very influential culture; sports, cars, french fries! USA... Very infulential political ideas; capitalism! alot of post socialism countries are now capitalist. Other than that you can't forget their largest land army in the world, backed up by 2 aircraft carriers and a powerful navy. Not to mention a stockpile a nukes, that if only you lived in Russia you'd say "my country has more than the USA" Not overrated, the USA deserves some hype.. |

Matter of opinion really. There's nothing that amazing about the US from my perspective, nothing that makes me think "OH WOW! I WISH I LIVED THERE!", no. Nor is there anything that makes me think it's a great country. |

I forgot to read ana's first post... "As far as standard of living goes" and none of my points backed up how the standard of living is.. All in all, I still don't think the USA is over-rated. Alot of immigrants came into the USA in order to find a better life, then again maybe other counries have better standards of living than the USA. apart from that, I gotta stick to my point that the USA is one of the most influential countries in the world. |

I second that completely, everyone thinks "WOW I wanna go to america", there's nothing special, the only reason why you think this is because of all their commercial crap. |

Are there any countries that you consider interesting? I think outside the U.S people may think we're over rated but like you said there isn't many special things here(there are but you usually have to pay a lot of money to experience the cool stuff). |

Back on point, I noticed that until the economic crisis, the USA had the largest economy ni the world. Therefore, a very good standard of living. If that was the case I can't call a country overrated. Let's say I'm from an underdeveloped Greek village, and my life is going nowhere. I look to the USA. Large Economy.. Job Offers.. better life.. a share of demographics If I can immigrate there, get a job, pump the economy, put money on my table. USA is my way. all this assuming the economy is not facing a crisis of course. Right now I'd stay away from the US until things cooled down. Edited by .Punxx, Dec 22 2008, 06:11 AM.

I think America is well-known and powerful now. Although I think there was a time, especially during the wars, that it was known for as much more respected nation. Yes, at one point i'm sure America consisted of many brilliant minds that changed all of the world with ideas and inventions that not many could ever think of. However now there is a wide spread of recognition for those brilliant minds in other countries. I think the US is becoming overrated. I think we were "the best" and now we've lost that status for quite sometime now. I'm sure in some aspects, as an American, I would hope we are still the most experienced and successful in. Although i know from research and obvious events in the past, we have many aspects that we aren't so amazing in. America, as proud of it as I am, needs some of its respect back in the world. |
