Why are you suddenly talking about discipline? That isn't the issue here and it certainly hasn't been addressed in this topic. Of course discipline is essential but heavy handed smacking and yelling isn't going to teach a child anything. Sure they won't do whatever again but then, they probably aren't going to do much again out of fear of being attacked. If you want to talk about 'discipline' then make another topic, this topic is addressing 'suicide'. |

So you are saying that parents that tell their kids only an A is acceptable is right? That's wrong. Everyone is different in skills. We have many different classes, some you will do better than others. Like for example I can get A's in math, but I have a really really hard time getting A's in english. Now imagine if I had parents that would look down upon me if I got less than an A in english? A class that I tried hard but still got a B or C-. that's wrong. Yeah you always ENCOURAGE your kids to do better, but never FORCE them to get ll A's cause when that happens the kids will feel like they aren't good enough for you ever. And that is when suicide thoughts occur. Ala the article I read for psychology about most people committing suicide in college being those whose parents are way more strict. It's wrong for parents to say an A is the only good thing, B is failing for me. It's good to encourage, key word encourage your kids to do better |

Obviously it is going to have a negative effect on the child if the parents will only accept an A and nothing less. Because then the child will never get praise; getting an A is what's expected and therefore they will not get any praise for doing so, and this will ultimately wear down their self-confidence and lead to depression. However, the other extreme is just as bad. Parents who don't care about what their child is doing in school are, in my opinion, worse than those that put too much pressure on. At least with parents who demand outstanding grades want the best for their children, althoug hthey go about it the wrong way. Anyway back on topic, people are obviously going to use their own experiences and views when addressing any subject. I have my own view on suicide, but I'll try to put that to one side for the moment (although I'll probably fail :P). Suicide can never be the answer. No matter how bad a problem there is always a way out of it. It may be close to impossible, but there is always a way. No matter who you are, which social class you are part of or what you have at your disposal there will be always be somone who can help you, be it a parent, another family member, a teacher, a friend or any of the phonelines avaliable. Obviously somebody in deep depression will not be able to think as calmly as those who aren't in the same situation as them, but surely they can't be so convinced that they have absolutely nobody that they just give up and kill themselves. I know that's my view coming through, but I personally can not understand somebody being that blind to the help around them. |

I agree with your 2nd paragraph to respond to Joker Snake. I'm not saying that pressure isn't hard on a college student, however, it is something that should be appreciated rather than looked down upon. I want my parents to be tough on me because that is how the world is. One will face hardships , which is why some parents may be overbearing and protective. If college students can't handle pressure, then they will have a tough road ahead of them. It is up to and individual person to have confidence and self esteem. Suicide is never the answer, but it does become the answer for certain people. When someone hits rock bottom, it is very difficult for them to think clearly and rational like we are now. The solutions you speak of SSJ Mitas might not be visible to someone, who has had nothing, but travesties in their lifetime. |

I never once said in my whole life suicide is the answer, as a matter of fact I find suicide the cowards way out. In my defense to SSJ Mitas, I did say I think parents should ENCOURAGE kids to do better not FORCE them to be "perfect" that's one easy way to get someone into depression and depression really sucks. Parents are supposed to encourage and help their kids do better, not threaten them with crap. In my view thats bad parenting. If the kid starts to slack off and starts failing, then yeah raise everything up a little. But if the kid is getting some B's and some C's and some A's but can;t get everything A's. Than that must mean that the kid does care, which means encouraging and help should work, not being mad at your kid for getting a B, oh yeah I have seen people like that, thankfully my mom was never like that. And this is not out of topic as it is one of the reasons why people commit suicide |

Joker, I knew what you were saying I was just giving my view on that particular area :P which is that there should obviously be some middle ground between uncomprimisingly high expectations and not caring at all. Also, I agree that suicide is the cowards way out and is in a way selfish. Sure it's your body and your life, but no matter what there'll always be people who will be affected by what you do. And people will respect you way more if you deal with your problems. And Angelic I suppose you're right, it is easy for us to think about the many different solutions to these problems people face. However, I stll think that suicide should never be the answer, no matter what mental state you are in. |

Suicide is a very existentialistic view of the world. It's a reassurance, I think. I have mixed feelings on this subject. It depends on how you look at death. If the person believes in an afterlife it's probably not that big of a deal to them. Death can be a gain or a loss, it's relative to the individual. Others are suffering so much that they don't know how to deal with their problems so they need an exit. These people need help and shouldn't be punished in my opinion. (I don't know why discipline was brought up but discipline is not the same thing as punishment...) I am completely supportive of assisted suicide for people who are dis-functional or in lifelong comas, etc. I don't know, it's tragic when you hear of it or actually lose someone to suicide... however, I'm not sure if I'm against it. I would always want to help and I would always want everyone to be helped, but sometimes we can't control it and things are going to happen. I'm not completely against suicide. I'm against punishing suicidal people. |

Alright so if someone believes in the afterlife most likely the person is religious, so correct me if I'm wrong but isn't suicide to be a sin and get you a ticket to hell in a religious view? |

Suicide is considered a sin for Catholics because life is a gift and it goes against God's will. |

Who would they arrest. The persons already dead. If they start arresting other people for someone else killing themselves then it would get silly. |
