Well in the UK it used to be. But if somebody thinks suicidal thoughts, they should seek help. Life is worth living. And I know that I refuse to die until I meet certain people and do certain things. As far as criminal offences are concerned, look at it sensibly, if somebody is going to kill themselves you can say one of two things. You could say: "I hear what you are saying and don't/do agree with it. But if you truely feel that way seek some help, go to an institution or something." OR "Ok fine, if you have the guts then do it." And I'll take the second one. Often when people want to kill themselves it's a cry for help. And the first step on the road to recovery is acceptance. They can accept the fact that they tried to kill themselves (And I don't see how you can fail, personally) and now want to continue living. And I would respect somebody who would admit that. |

Yes they should pick up the dead body, handcuff it and throw them in prision for life. Of course it shouldn't be a crime, you can't arrest dead people, although religiously you can be refused burial in certain places if you commited suicide. Attepted suicide is going to get you sectioned under the mental health act, so that you can get treatment, arresting someone for it isn't going to help them. Most people commit suicide either because they feel they have lost everything or they have some form of mental illness or even feeling like they haven't accomplished anything. I don't believe you should punish someone who has attempted suicide, you should help them in anyway possible. Though I do agree with the assisted suicide for those people in extream pain or suffering and can't lead a decent life and don't have anything to live for. |

From what i told people commit suicide because of stress. Things like
I think it would be difficult to get someone with suicidal thoughts to remove those thoughts. |

The only thing suicidal people need is treatment. They need help whether it be a form of therapy or medication or both. People can get suicidal for many reasons: major depression (caused by problems in life or health), bipolar disorder, chronic diseases (various cancers, HIV/AIDS, heart conditions..), etc. Essentially, suicidal thoughts can't be helped because they stem from imbalances in the body and brain. You can't punish these people in the criminal system; honestly, they are suffering enough. |

I don't think that suicide should be a criminal offence. I mean assuming that their suicide attempt fails, throwing them in jail is the last thing that should be done. As has been said, they need help in dealing with whatever problem has pushed them that far. Jail is only going to push them even further until they actually do kill themselves. However, I have little sympathy for people who self-harm or commit suicide. I just can't understand why somebody would want to take their own life and draw their own blood rather than facing their problems. This is easy for me to say as I haven't had to deal with anything as serious as Terminal illnesses, loss of a family member or multiple family members and I could maybe see the reasoning in it for those reasons (although I still do not agree with it at all) but other reasons mentioned such as relationship problems and job stress. I mean seriously those should be able to be dealt with without taking your own life. As for euthanasia, that's a different issue and something I only agree with if the person is in terrible pain and are going to be in pain up until they die. |

Oh, in a sense you could be onto something, people who brag about how many times they self harm or have attempted suicide want nothing more than attention so giving them sympathy would be wasted. However there are those people who have serious problems they can't handle on their own and are too scared to speak out about them out of fear of what might happen if they do, what people will think of them and so forth. So suicide seems like the only option left open to them. It's easy for some people to turn around and say "Why don't you face up to your problems?" when the simple fact is, some people can't, some people just want someone else to talk to and help them, others want more help with things, depends on the situation and what happend to them. As for self-harming, there is a reason for it, but I don't quite understand it, from what I read into it, it's a way of getting rid of some of the pain felt inside by turning it into physical pain, making it easier to cope with. Though there are probably many reasons, depends on the person. But I don't agree that you can't sympathise with someone just based on the fact that they have thought of comminting suicide or self-harm, you can't possibly imagin what is going through their minds. Because as stated above, some people can't face upto their problems, fear probably being the main reason. |

I think it's your life you should be free to do with it as you wish as long as you don't hurt someone else because of your actions. BUT I mean that in a physical sense, not in any other way. So I believe suicide should be legal, not looked down upon or seen as a sin. |

But you know suicide can hurt other people as well. I mean think about it you kill yourself well you won't feel any more pain ever. There are those that love you, you may think that no one cares about you, but there are always someone. Then they will be in pain for their lost one. I don't think suicide should be a crime for starters the person is dead. Second even if they fail its all mental, which means they need help not prison. You put a suicidal person in prison you will definitely make things worst, the person is most likely to become more suicidal. As people already mentioned it's for depression reasons, health, etc. I once read an article that highest percentage of college people that committed suicide was because their parents were really strict. Like for example someone has parents that to them nothing but an A is acceptable. The person can't get an A for the semester or whatever. They feel like they aren't good enough for anything. It's all psychological |

How can you say suicide shouldn't be looked down upon or seen as wrong? It's such a cowardly thing to do. Your life is something that shouldn't be wasted and everybody is going to have to face problems at one time or another, doesn't mean you just run away from them by taking your own life. And also like Joker said, it is not as easy as "it's my body/life and I'm gonna take it and thath's the end". There are always family and friends, people that care about you and who will be affected by suicide. |

No, I really believe that's not the right message you want to spread. Suicide should never be an option, no matter how harsh your life is. And you know what? As time goes and as I get more and more life experience, I've been able to tell that most of the suicides that occur nowadays due to people's lack of character and inner strenght. There's so many suicides happening because of broken hearts, and that's just sad. One big lesson we should all take in our lives is that, when we think we're down, when we think we're reaching the bottom... there is ALWAYS someone a lot worse than us. When I think I'm down, I think of those people whose families are in wars, those people who struggle to survive everyday, those who have no food to eat... and THOSE are the ones who are down. Most of us expect to be happy 24 hours a day, and fail to realize life isn't necessarily easy for anyone... there are ups and downs, but there is always a solution. And if we have a good family, good friends, comfort in our lives... we're very fortunate and we should never take those things for granted because they're precious. I'm always talking about being positive in life, that has a reason. It help us staying down to earth and seeing things clearer. I know sometimes it's all beyond people's control. That's when we should ask for professional help without being ashamed of it. Or if we can't do it ourselves, talk to a close friend, let someone else know exactly what we're going through, so we know that someone can step up to help us when we feel like we can't do it ourselves. |

In today's society, I don't understand why parents need to be less strict than they were decades ago. First, it is wrong to slap a baby's hiny then it's too much pressure. I know pressure can be tough, but they should be happy that their parents care about how well they do in school. There are parents, who can give a rats ***** if their child does well. I'm someone, who believes that people should be pushed to do better. As for suicide, it is a tough subject to discuss because everyone is different. What kills one can bring joy to another. Some people are not mentally and psychologically strong. If something traumatic happens, some can deal better than others. These statements I make are for Kris to understand. Not everyone is a positive thinker like you are, not everyone has loving friends or family, etc. Some can't afford the help. It's easy to look at what you have or do and try to fit it into other people's point of view. |

That's far too logical for some people, there are people who suffer from mental health problems where to them, suicide seems like the only opinion. It's not their fault they think that way, it's the illness, so to say it's "cowardly" could come across as quite offencive to those people. It's all fine and well saying "You should be happy with what you have, there are people who care about you blah blah blah" but that only works from a normal persons point of view, not someone who has mental health problems, you have to remember that. Not saying all people who commit suicide have mental health problems but they probably feel really down at the time and it's hard to say what's going through someones mind at that point. When you are calm, you have clear thoughts but when you are upset and/or panicing, your thoughts are going to be clouded so any logical thought prosess is pretty much out of the question.
Punishment to do better is just wrong, it can make people fearful of getting things wrong which then leads to anxity, depression or other illnesses because they will feal worthless if they don't meet expectations. Praise and rewarding where the person has done well is good, constrive critisem where they've done it wrong so they can improve. Destrictive critisem and other punishment won't help anyone improve, it'll just make them feel bad for getting it wrong. Smacking is in a sense wrong, depends if you are heavy handed or not, a light smack isn't going to hurt and it will give the impression that what act the child was doing is wrong. Young children don't know much English, so something like a light tap on the hand isn't going to hurt and might teach them to stop. Smacking hard and/or shouting at the child will get them to stop but in a negative manner, they could grow up with a fear of people in authority or other problems.
I agree with much of this, a lot of people are basing their opinions on the way they think, which is the wrong approch to take. Even if someone has had a decent life, they can still feel bad and get into a situation where they think suicide is the only opinion left for them. Not everyone is mentally/psychologically stong like you say and it can take a lot for those people to admit that and seek help, they seek help in the intrest of others and themself I would imagin. Other people have recived help by reletives/friends/other noticing problems with them or they've attempted suicide, some people never get help because they are too scared, thinks it makes them look weak, don't trust doctors or other reasons. It's hard to say what goes through someones mind when they think of suicide, those who do seek help are stong to do so I think, it takes a lot for some people to seek help, yet if people say they are weak for considering suicide then they might not seek the help they need and just end up feeling weak and feel worse about themselfs. All in all, I don't agree the suicide can ever be right but I also don't believe that people can judge those who consider suicide. Who are you to judge someone elses life? |
