Pop out graphic

I've experimented with many pop out graphics in the past. But I was wondering, what you all thought about how the edge of the render should look? Drop Shadow? Blur Tool? Thoughts?

Here is a sig I've made in the past that had a very pixelated edge in which I blurred the edge and added a drop shadow. The result was an improvement ntl. But what would you do instead?

It really depends on the quality the render then? Naruto up there had terrible pixelated edges.

yea usually if the render waz badly cut.. i would blur around it

in the sig.. dont blur the part of the render inside the sig area.. use the smudge tool to blend it in well and that will take care of the pixelated edges also

I used blur on that one, and I use blur on renders whether I think they need it or not. It just helps usually. Does anyone else have any tips?

Also on the naruto one, something I could probably improve on is how it blends in with the background of the sig itself. Such as overlaying the background at the bottom.
I was using PSP8 back then, so my abilities were not as good.

I prefer nothing, just sticking out, no drop shadow or anything.

For example:

I think the 2nd looks much cleaner and smoother.

I can't remember, it's been a while since I have made one, though I think I would use a drop shadow if it was cut badly. Not sure now, haven't made a sig in a long time.

Theres an example I just made I think it might help out. The nicer the render the easier it is for you to make it work. I cut out parts of the render to help out with the pop out effect. I'll post the render later to help you see what I removed. Also when you're making a pop out sig you want to remember the word depth because that will really help you achieve the effect. This is just a basic stab at it using sharpening and blurring. The sharper the area the closer it will it look and if you blur an area it will seem further away. Just remember to use them very slightly. Over blurring or sharpening can lead to demented outcomes. Here's something to help you see where I sharpened and blurred.

Render: Click

That should be helpful for people to get started. I might go into more detail and some other effects later, but this is a good practice point.

the arm looks a bit iffy and the claw is a bit pixely on the edges but I agree about sharpening the render out of the sig to give it more depth
