This is just a thought, and feel absolutely free to disagree with me and correct me. I think maybe we can all learn from this. Aside from a few exceptions, I've realized that a lot of characters in this show just seem like meat heads. This is especially true if you watch DBZ and don't have the backgrounds on characters that are met in DB. For example, if I was to describe Tien, I would say that he used to be violent, careless, and somewhat ignorant. Now, he is just... well, I wouldn't know exactly how to describe him. Yamcha used to be a bandit in the desert, and he often lost his nerve around girls and didn't handle stress well. Now...? I feel that the characters lost some of their identity, and changed into copies of each other because they weren't the main characters. Vegeta is probably the most developed character in the series, he has deep rooted emotions, and is conniving and sly. He changes after being around Goku for so long, but he still holds his own character traits.

See you said it right there. Goku.
Goku's story is partly how he changed and influenced all these characters. He changed everyone that was once "bad" or unaware to a fellow friend and hero. Krillin was the only real good guy through-out. Tien was honorable, but presumed as a villian because of his master. Yamcha's only known way to survive was to be a Desert Bandit, famous for his wolf-fand-fist. It wasn't till goku came along and sent him to Master Roshi for training and stuff. The Characters developed as in all storys. Vegeta didn't lose anything but his "sly" He held it all back. Episode with Majin Vegeta proves that. I can agree that these people have changed but it's what the story is apart of. Everyone but Goku changed characterisitcs and some of there traits stayed. It's all part of the story.

Yeah, I definitely know that Goku changed them, I know that's part of the story. But, I still feel that the characters became dull to the point where it wasn't intended to be part of the story, but was to save room for the more important characters. You can see at the end of DB that Yamcha, Tien, and Chiatzou had indeed changed, but they weren't boring characters. In Z, (particularly starting from Namek, on...) they could almost be nonexistent.

They became part of the background because they
weren't as mush of a threat nor were they as powerful anymore.
Once Piccolo came around, Tien and Yamcha hardly stood a chance.
I think the villians just got more powerul to a point where they cudn't keep up.

Mhm, exactly. It's a little disappointing. And without the power, their roles bit the dust despite whether they had a powerful personality or not. That's the point, the development of the characters is pretty weak, especially compared to other anime where every character has a distinct background and a distinct personality.
