Power levels

Sorry that I haven't posted anything in a while, I've been really busy. Luckily though, I've had some time to re- watch a lot of Dragon ball episodes. I was wondering if anyone was either interested in discussing the consistency of power levels or had any input on the topic. Specifically, since in Dragon ball there weren't solid numbers assigned to the characters, are the numbers consistent between the transition from DB to DBZ? I don't remember whether or not the manga gave any information about power levels in DB. At the beginning of Z, I think Goku was around 330. (Sad, how we can recall these numbers from memory, right? XD) But what abilities does that give Goku? As a child he could already lift up a car and take down huge creatures with a single punch. Now as a man, he can chop down a tree and slightly struggle to drag it back to his house. How much has he changed? Perhaps his base power level was the same at the beginning but he didn't have control yet. Or, maybe having distinct numbers to represent someone's strength wasn't yet decided until Z. Sorry for rambling, can anyone contribute?
