I've come to the conclusion that Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop are set in the same universe. Here are the links I have discovered via some internet searching, coupled with my own observations.

-They both came from Bandai and Sunrise a year apart, with OS coming first.

-Obviously, they are both space-westerns.

-Both center around a bounty hunter and his crew.

-The voice acting director and head animator are the same for both series,

-Iris, the waitress from Clyde's bar in Outlaw Star, can be seen in the Bebop episode "Metal Queen" She talks to Spike and references a former love (Gene Starwind) in the manga. She also makes cameos in other episodes.

-In the Japanese version of episode 2 of Cowboy Bebop, the doctor mentions that the briefcase is big enough to carry a small woman inside. This is clearly a reference to Melfina, whom Jim and Gene discovered inside a briefcase in episode 1 of Outlaw Star.

-Spike wears the same suit that Gene wore in episode 13 of Outlaw Star throughout the series.

I've run across hundreds of topics across the net debating as to which anime is superior. Some even say that OS is a rip-off of CB. That is clearly absurd, both because OS came first and because we can clearly see that they are set in the same universe.

It also must be true that Angel Links, which was designed to be a full-blown spin off of Outlaw Star, is also set in the same universe as Bebop.

If you like Bebop, try Outlaw Star and Angel Links. Take notice that Outlaw Star and Bebop are very different series and the links are very hard to spot, but the links exist and they are similar in many aspects.
