Album: Indestructible
Artist: Disturbed

While the album isn't officially out yet, several radio websites have posted the songs for free listening. I've listened to the album several times over now, and I think I'm ready to make my judgement about it. I'll rate each song individually, and then the album as a whole. Hopefully readers find this review helpful in making their decisions as to whether or not this album is right for them.

Indestructible - 9.5/10

This is easily the strongest track on the entire album. David Draiman himself has called this song the "soldier's anthem" as a tribute to the American troops in Iraq. The song starts out with a State of Emergency alarm and begins with a heavy guitar riff. The verses are fast-paced and patriotic, but the chorus is where this song really shines. It's smooth, original, and is exactly what the band was aiming for: motivating. When you're listening to this song, it's literally possible to feel like you can do anything with phrases like "Indestructible, determination that is incorruptible, from the other side a terror to behold, annihilation will be unavoidable". The only reason I didn't give this song a perfect score was because the guitar solo was a bit of a letdown. It was much too slow for the rest of the song, and really should've contributed to the "motivating" factor they were pressing with it.

Inside The Fire - 8/10

Another strong track, but it's only natural with the imposing message the band set in for it. The song is about Draiman's former girlfriend committing suicide and the devil (so to speak) telling him the only way to be with her again is to kill himself and join her in Hell. A very powerful message, and the song delivers very well. It has a decent solo, and both the verses ahnd chorus are very powerful.

Deciever - 7.5/10

There was a lot of anticipation for this song, and overall I felt it was good, but not one of the strongest tracks on the album. The chorus tends to get repetetive in my opinion, and there aren't any "wow" factors that would make me keep coming back like Indestructible has.

The Night - 10/10

My personal favorite song on the entire album. It's not as powerful as Indestructible, but it's much more epic sounding. The chorus of this song is easily the most moving thing Disturbed has ever written, and the guitar solo is excellent as well. The verses are a bit bland, but the pre-chorus is excellently done in a way to build up anticipation for the chorus itself. Overall, while Indestructible may be Disturbed's "anthem for soldiers", this song has easily got to be their masterpiece, and perhaps the greatest song since Down With the Sickness.

Perfect Insanity - 8/10

This song was written back in Disturbed's earlier days, and a remake was made and put on their new album. Overall you can really tell that this song wasn't written during the same time as the other songs on the album, which is both a good and bad thing. It has nowhere near the same messages as most of the other songs on the album, and Draiman's famous "grunts" are present as well. It really is a trip back to their darker material they used to write, which makes it feel a bit out of place. Nonetheless, while this song would've been perfect on The Sickness or Ten Thousand Fists, it's still a solid song.

Haunted - 6/10

I'm going to be completely honest and say the chorus on this song annoys me. It's one of those things that gets stuck in your head and doesn't come out for a week. The verses are definitely good, and in the bridge there's a typical "creepiness" factor Disturbed throws in about converting to darkness. It's not a good song, but the chorus is always the meat of the song in my eyes, and that's really what this song lacks. That, and the phony horror sounds at the beginning of the song.

Enough - 8.5/10

The verses are fast-paced, the chorus is harmonic and very easy to listen to, and the guitar riff in between suits the song well. There's even another touch of Disturbed's "creepy" factor in the bridge as well, which is a shame considering they used that instead of a guitar solo. It also doesn't have the epic or intesne factor that Indestructible and The Night have, which is why I didn't score it quite as high as them. Despite this, I'd still rank it in the top half of the album.

The Curse - 7/10

There isn't anything wrong with this song per se, but there isn't anything that makes it stand out. The sounds are exactly what you'd find in Believe, and while the message is quite clear, it just doesn't deliver. The choruses and verses both sound decent enough, but there aren't any "wow" factors that play into it either. It's just there, or so to speak. Even the guitar solo isn't anything to speak highly of.

Torn - 6.5

Better than Haunted, but still not nearly good enough to even be comparable to the rest of the songs on the album. In some respects it sounds similar to Enough, but not as well put together, or powerful. It doesn't have any factors that make it stand out, in some ways similar to problems like The Curse.

Criminal - 8.5/10

I don't know why, but I really like this song. It's catchy. The chorus is very uptempo and the verses are powerfully done. It's very different than other songs you'd expect from Disturbed as well, which is a good thing as a few of the songs on this album sound pretty repetetive. The bridge fits the song well as well, and overall it's an excellent addition to the album.

Divide - 5/10

My personal least favorite track on the album, Divide is just annoying all around. There aren't many positive things I can say about the chorus, and the verses are half-ass versions of what Disturbed used to write. The bridge is horrible, although the guitar solo does have some credibility to it. Overall, I would've put This Moment or Parasite (both B-sides) on the album instead. This song just doesn't belong.

Façade - 9/10

This is my third-favorite track on the album. It's easily Disturbed's most powerful closing track on an album. The chorus is both epic and intense, but neither as much as Indestructible or The Night. Still, the combination of the two are extremely well done. The verses aren't overaly fast-paced, but they fit the song and are well done. The guitar solo is very unique, and when the somewhat distorted guitar kicks in it really gives you that feeling that you're escaping reality, which is what the song overall is about. Both the intro and outro are very upbeat, which is even more praise for an already terrific song.

OVERALL - 8.5/10

This is what I would call a step in the right direction for Disturbed. Their songs are backed with meaning this time around, and while there are some weaker tracks (Torn, Haunted, Divide), even those songs aren't bad enough to skip over if you're listening to it in your car. And, while Ten Thousand Fists and The Sickness were both great albums, I would still say that Indestructible surpasses both of them. The strongest tracks are:

-Indestructible
-The Night
-Enough
-Criminal
-Façade

______

So that's it for my review. I am a harsh critic, and even though I love Disturbed, I tried to judge the album as fairly as possible without sounding biased. Even the songs that got low scores are worth listening to though, so I'd reccomend this album for any heavy rock fans, no matter what specific genre you're into.

Thanks for reading,

~BLK

Nice review.

But I totally disagree with putting "Parasite" on the album, Not that its a bad song, but just that "Parasite" doesn't belong either. Thats m opinion anyways.

But yeah i pretty much agree with everything you've said. Though i actually liked "Haunted" lol and "Divide" :)

I don't skip over any of the tracks in this album, I know we talked in PM for a while but even on Linkin Parks MTM i skip over "Hand's Held High" Cause it just annoys the hell out of me. To be honest its the worst track on MTM, it just sucks. lol

@ Explorer: Thank you very much, I spent quite a while on it. :)

@ Slade: The thing is that too many times I find reviews written by fans of the thing being reviewed. If you go onto iTunes and look up Minutes to Midnight there are reviews made by fans of LP, so naturally most of the songs got great scores. I tried to be completely neutral while reviewing this album, and give the scores based off of what somebody listening to Disturbed for the first time might think. And I agree, Hands Held High isn't a great song either.

True. But i don't read reviews for albums. Infact yours is the only review for an album I've ever read, and i only read it cause I already listened to the album. Id rather listen and judge for myself. But that saying, I am a hard core LP fan, I love them, but im not one of those fan boys who love every single song cause i'll freely admit some of LP's songs aint that good lol

Disturbed is *****in good, Well I heard those songs, not the whole album, but the songs are *****in good. I just listened to songs from theirs from the album that came out in 2006.. i find songs like stricken/just stop/land of confusion better than these ones but they still good.
