~Out on the Tiles~

It's a bit old now, but I figured I had to write something about it after finally seeing it.

I thought zeitgeist was worth watching, but should be taken with a grain of salt. The research is drawn from a variety of sources, some of which seem more legitimate than others, and may be rather selective. Let's just say this movie wasn't the product of a lifetime of in-depth exhaustive research on its creators part. And it's rather sensationalistic. To his credit, he urges the viewer to do their own research, and posts corrections about (mostly minor)inaccuracies he has found or has been alerted to on the website.

I watched it as someone who has already done a lot of research on the origins of Christianity and parallels to other mythological and astrological symbolism, as well as the questions and conspiracy theories about 911. So, much of this information wasn't new and shocking to me. I thought the first portion was perhaps the most accurate and effective as far as comprehensively tying things together. Similarities between Christ and other mythological figures have been well documented and are fairly obvious (I've even looked into a theory that proposes JC was based on Julius Caeser, which seemed just as likely as many other theories...the point being that this is a tale told previous to Christianity-having some variations, but without any true originality in the basic features). I thought the connections made between astrological symbolism(also older than Christianity) as well as actual astronomical events was an important element in deconstructing the mythology. Like the fact that the birth of the "Son" (Christmas), is actually the birth of the Sun (while speaking of this in terms of birth is of course metaphorical, the experience of days becoming longer is a real and tangible astronomical fact!). Anyways, I thought that much in this segment could be enlightening to the otherwise ignorant viewer.

As for the 911 conspiracy stuff, I've been researching this due to my own skepticism about the official story from the beginning. I don't doubt that Muslim extremists would want to do such a thing, and even think it's feasible that they could carry it out. But certain specifics about the official story have always seemed highly improbable to me, and the official response to the event has also seemed very "fishy". I know there's a lot of misinformation out there and that certain conspiracy theories have been well-debunked or just shown to be logically absurd, and I think this film did a disservice to legitimate inquiry by drawing conclusions from very shaky foundations.

So why did I still think it was worth watching? I guess because it could motivate people to question and investigate areas of "common knowledge" they've simply taken for granted. And I think that's healthy, so long as they aren't just replacing one type of propaganda and sloppy thinking with another (of course some always will, but what can be done?)
