~Out on the Tiles~

It was November 9, 1966. John Lennon was visiting an art gallery, for one Yoko Ono. While at that gallery, Lennon noticed an exhibit. It was a very small sign, hung high on the wall. In order to read what it said, he had to climb a ladder. When he did, he saw the word “look”. One and a half years later, John and Yoko began what was perhaps one of the strongest, if not strangest, relationships in rock and roll history. I may have very well overlooked that small sign, had I visited that same art exhibit. In fact, I find that I often miss the little things. With that in mind… the small details that may be missed, but having once been comprehended, changed the way one views one’s world. It has been several years since my first reading of "The Satanic Bible”. I do, however, remember reading these words, at the end of the Preface: “Herein you will find truth---and fantasy. Each is necessary for the other to exist; but each must be recognized for what it is.” I was a little confused about that. Looking around the rest of the book, I assumed that, by “truth”, Dr. LaVey meant Satanism; and, by “fantasy”, he was referring to the many other philosophies, such as Christianity. After I actually read the whole thing, I saw those two sentences in a whole new light. The faculties of both intellect and imagination are needed in order to fully appreciate the writings of The Good Doctor. Here are two sentences at the end of a preface. Much like that small sign, hanging in Yoko Ono’s art exhibit, one may easily overlook them. But, once read, a new world opens up. A world defined by Anton LaVey as the satanic philosophy. Since the dawn of time, the human animal has soared its greatest heights, and lowest lows, fueled by a powerful imagination. Perhaps one of the things that make us unique, as a species, is the ability to fantasize. Indeed the first magicians raised their wands, and, as a fire lighted their ritual chamber, drew their fantasies on cave walls. Perhaps the great beasts found by later archeologists were the reminders of spells cast so long ago, to attract life saving food into their lives. The use of fetishes and masks have often given ancient Witches and Warlocks control over the world around them. Little has changed. The use of fantasy is a powerful tool in the belt of any mage, both seasoned and fledgling. Close your eyes, and imagine an erotic moment. Feel the changes that take place within your loins. Given enough attention, these fantasies will raise your body temperature; cause you to perspire and open doors to physical pleasures. Remember a moment of being wronged. Notice the knot that develops in the pit of your stomach. Sense the energy, as your mind gives rise to acts of justice. If the use of fantasy can cause such profound change in your body, is it impossible to imagine that it can go far beyond? I stand back, and behold the wrestling that often takes place between minds far greater than my own. We so much need to know the truth. The whole of the scientific endeavor began with the human need to understand, to know what is and how to use that knowledge to better our lot. That is one of the mighty arms that make up the Satanist. The other is to imagine what may be, to wonder about the limits of what we know and the ability to deftly use the tool of fantasy. May I suggest that it is within the mind of the sorcerer that those two arms intertwine, adding strength-to-strength, opening up, not only what is…but also what may be? I feel that one is of very little use without the other. “Herein you will find truth---and fantasy. Each is necessary for the other to exist; but each must be recognized for what it is.” One can only take you so far. |
