Do you remember the years where laptops and cellphones were rarely accessible? If one wanted to go on the internet, one would go to a computer desk in a seperate room or to the library. Conversely, times have changed, and the internet is easily reached by numerous handheld devices. For instance, many people keep their laptops in the bedroom now for business or entertainment. The devices like cell phones have some pros and cons: Pros: Can keep in touch with loved-ones more often Check important e-mails Look for useful information (ex: Look for Restaurant) Finding people from all parts of the globe Cons: Lack of communication skills Addication can occur Less attention to surroundings In a recent study, it has shown that people have become more dependent on their technological devices such as: Video Gaming Consoles, Cell Phones, Laptops, etc. What does this have to do with relationships? Some will text on their cellphones at dinner tables, in private bedrooms, or during a random conversation on the street rather than giving their attention to those closeby. I was listening to the radio, and there were interesting stories proving the extreme need for technological advices. For one, a girl dated a boyfriend, who would spend hours on his PSP. He told her that he would pay more attention to her once he defeated the game. Secondly, another incident consisted of a man reaching in a deep frier because his blackberry had fallen in. Lastly, a woman dated a man, who would talk on his cell phone while being intimate with her. (Uhm..ew...Nasty right?) Since the post I did was long and some may not read it, the debate question is: Does technology/electronics have a positive or negative effect on relationships? |

It may have affect on those that are dumb lol. I mean people are stupid (not directed at anyone on this forum) so they are going to do dumb things like that guy on the phone while they are intimate. Im going to be honest I like computer and video game systems for entertainment. And no matter what im going to use them and have them. BUT you have to know the limits also on how long to use them and when. Like if I was on a date Id probably just turn my cell phone off. If I just got a game and I real want to beat but someone wants to hang out, I'll go hang out with the person and play the game a little later when I get home. It's not like I'm going to trade my social life for some electronic. Yes I like them and want to have them, but as I said people have to know the limits |

Anybody who pays more attention to a video game than their girlfriend is an idiot. To an extent, this is true, but it's just the way it is and is going to stay that way. Technology makes things easier, which is one thing humans are drawn towards: conviniency. |

Ive never chose video games etc over spending time with a girlfriend. Though there have been a few times on World of Warcraft where ive pretending to be ill to get out of plans ive made with friends just so i could finish it. BUT. Only if the weather was really bad or something But technology is very convenient, I have a laptop in my room and theres been loads of times when i can just log onto MSN and make plans with my friends. |

I respect some of your answers, but you're basing it off personal accounts. I'm speaking in a general sense. |

lol To be honest its really hard to speak in general especially since I don't like getting into people's privates life, and there are a lot more people than the ones I know therefore I couldn't speak for general at all |

I meant some of the examples that were used were personal experiences. I'm trying to discuss from observations that someone may encounter throughout the day. Technology makes things easier for people, but does it help them with their communications skills and/or relationships. |
