When was the fighting action better? During DB or DBZ? I know some people think DB had better fights because they were more technical, more real and hand-to-hand. DBZ brought an explosion of ki blasts and some more fantasy, which made the fights look more appealing to the eye and maybe more interesting. But what is YOUR opinion? When was the fighting action better? |

I like this topic. It's something I've actually thought about before. I started out watching DBZ, and I always thought the fights were awesome at the beginning of the show, but got progressively more boring as they went, because they relied more on energy blasts than hand-to-hand combat. It was only about last summer when I started watching Dragonball, and I was so impressed with the fights. There was no dramatic "stare down" between the fighters, and there were MAYBE one or two energy beams shot during the fights between two characters. Here's how I'd rank the fights (from best to worst): 1) DBZ - Saiyan-Garlic Jr. Saga 2) DB Fights 3) DBZ - Trunks-Cell Games Saga 4) DBZ - Great Saiyaman-Kid Buu Saga I still think that the fights earlier on in DBZ were the greatest. They used more energy blasts than in DB, but they still used a lot of melee techniques as well, and there weren't any dumb filler parts. Then DB had the more traditional martial arts style of fighting, which I seemed to enjoy more than the rest of the DBZ fights. |

The fights in Dragonball were more traditionally Martial Arts like, they hard my body and hand to hand maneuvers, which was good and entertaining. But Dragonball Z brought something which captured millions of people, it had Explosions, Ki Blasts, Impact Punches and Kicking, which is what made it what it is today, i enjoyed Dragonball Z fights more. Piccolo vs 17 is one of my favourite fights overall the whole series alongside Piccolo Jr vs Goku. Dragonball Z fighting gets my vote. |

I'm going to have to actually go wiith DB's style of fighting on this one. The fights were very raw, and old-school. Rarely any fancy ki attacks were used. And the Kamehameha was actually something SPECIAL to be learned. Of course the Majin Vegeta v Goku fight in DBZ will always hold a very special place in my heart. But I'm still going to go with Dragon Ball, lol. |

I'd say DBZ. It was more rough and the battles were jumping fast. I still like that DB fact that they tried a little harder doing the Kamehameha. In DBZ, Cell just had it in his genetics, and Goten just said it to make it work. It ruined the fun when they didn't even the word. |

The 22nd and 23rd budokai in dragonball are some of the best fighting scenes i have ever seen in an anime, the only ones to me that compare are the saiyan saga fights, and the fights on namek, so i'm even, but the best fight in my opinion is either Goku vs Tien, Goku vs piccolo in the 23rd budokai, Goku vs Frieza (lot's of filler but epic), and suprisingly, jeice vs vegeta (pure awesomness on vegetas part), and all the z fighters vs nappa and the saibamen |

I've voted for DBZ strictly because the fights contain a lot more emotional drama. The fights in DB were definitely better choreographed as they didn't seem to re-use frames like they did in DBZ. My top fights are: 1. Goku Vs. Frieza (before Goku turned SSj) 2. Goku Vs. Tien (DB) 3. Piccolo Vs. #17 4. Goku Vs. Majin Vegeta 5. Goku & Piccolo Vs. Raditz (am I the only one who thoroughly enjoyed this fight? Nobody ever seems to note it as one of their favourites) |

Goku & Piccolo VS Raditz was a good fight, I particularly enjoyed watching two big rivals teaming up for a bigger cause. I voted DBZ, even though I agree DB had more realistic and, like Z Fighter called it, old school fights (more combos and technical fighting), DBZ just caught my attention and made me get stuck in front of the tv screen, following the fights with a crazy passion and excitement. I think DBZ took the concept of fighting to the new level. The drama got better, there was more emotion going on, the enemies got stronger and more malicious, and of course the ki blasts revolutionized my idea of a combat. There was more lighting, more energy, more color, and more variety of techniques and attacks. |

I prefer the fights in Dragonball because they involved more hand to hand combat. Big techniques were rarely used, and ki energy was limited. They seemed to last longer as well unlike in DBZ where there is more dialogue than action. |

Seriously? Did you even see the fight between Goku and Frieza? Or the mammoth Cell Games? Dragonball fights lasted no where near as long as DBZ fights. |

I think she meant the fight lasted longer.. not the talking. The DB fights were actually longer FIGHTS, the DBZ fights were in longer episodes because it was always "blah blah blah mi mi moo" |

Dragonball, hands down. Besides the fact that there was much less talking and filler in the middle of important fights, I just thought they were more fun to watch. There was a sense of wonderment with each of their new techniques and accomplishments. The minor characters were powerful enough to make a difference, which is a big plus for me. It was really irritating to watch Piccolo, Tien, Yamcha, Krillin, and Chiaotzu turning into cheerleaders at the end of Dragonball Z. Tien vs. Yamcha in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai Goku vs. King Piccolo Goku vs. Piccolo in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai Tien vs. Goku (both times) Goku vs. Jackie Chun in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai Krillin vs. Chiaotzu in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai Goku vs. Grandpa Gohan Classic fights, all of them. Also, when Yajirobe cut Cymbol in half and ate him was pure win. |

This comment actually sums up what mostly everyone said here, and I completely agree. Fillers and the gradual loss of that excitement you got when a new technique arose with every new fight is something that made certain fights in DBZ completely lose their flavor. There just wasn't anything left that could surprise me, we've seen it all - blasts powerful enough to destroy planets, huge spirit bombs, all types of regeneration and self-multiplication and whatnot. The funny this is, whenever I remember DBZ I think of long, great fights unlike the DB which only sparks memories of humorous moments. This, I believe, says something - while DB fights themselves may have been more interesting to watch compared to those saga-long DBZ fights, it's these great sacrifices and emotional moments in those fights that made the difference. In DB, fights were all about overcoming your foe, in DBZ, they had far more character. |
