Z stands for Z fighters or warriors. The names of the warriors are Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chiazu, Trunks, and Goten.

QUOTE (Volume 7 of Shonen Jump @ July, 2006)
In Japan, the Dragonball and Dragonball Z manga are a single series simply known as Dragonball. In America, Dragonball is volumes 1-16 of the manga and Dragonball Z is volumes 17-42- that corresponds with volumes 1-26, the 26th of which has finally been published! What does the “Z” mean? It’s just a subtitle invented for the second season of the Japanese anime, distinguishing the earlier, funnier stories from the later, more intense stories when the characters are grown up.

I took that from Tyro, who took it from shonen jump, a reliable source

Maybe the newcomers in DragonBall (Demon King Piccolo Saga) were dubbed Z-Fighters, then the newcomers in DBZ. I mean, they never wore Z-Fighter uniforms.

You ever think Z-Fighters stands for the Z. Couldn't you figure that out hmmmm Phewl X( <_<

I really didn't care for the Z, meaning I didn't make a big deal of it, it flowed well with the title and show. BUT some think the Z in DBZ doesn't mean Zeta, but they think it's "Zenkai", which is in the title of the first ending song of DBZ, "Tobikkiri Zenkai Power". "Zenkai" means "Full Thottle", and full throttle applys to the characters, scenes, and the whole show in general just going all the way extreme, more than DB did.

Or it cud be Cellgetas theory of it being the last letter, so it's the "last" saga, but that would mean only 2 sagas and, it wasn't last cuz GT came out(even though AT didn't make it).

Or it cud be Zeta as other's are saying.

I'm not 100% sure tbh so i can't say for sure.

Well like it's been mentioned before Dragonball z is "Doragon bôru zetto" Japanese. Although in Japanese there in no character equivalent to the, letter Z. So zetto is merely an adaptation of the letter z. Basically zetto just means z. Now why z? I have no idea, although I do no that the original manga of Dragonball did include the portions which DBZ in the anime. In reality DB and DBZ are just one manga. It was Toei Animation which chose to spit them into. Yes, for all I know it can stand for last, or for full throttle, or it just plain sounded cool to the animators who knows. GT wasn't any where near being dreamed up by Toei studios at the time they were creating DBZ.....I hate GT in the GT in my head plays out completely different. There's still SSJ 4 and a super cyborg 17 but that's where the similarities end. :p

In a Q and A with AT the question was brought up and this is how he responded.

Q: What does the Z in Dragonball Z stand for? (Most of us know that the Z was only used in the anime and it was just an index to separate Goku as a kid and Goku as an adult. But check out the response from Toriyama-san).

A: I was starting to run out of things for Dragonball and I really wanted to finish the series. So I thought that if I put a Z at the end of Dragonball, people would think that it was going to end soon!

Err I actually found DBZ to be more about Vegeta and Goku than Gohan >_> also Z has nothing to do with the Z sword nor Ultimate Gohan, the reason is because when Akira started writing thhe Z series he hadn't even thought of the Buu saga yet

lol... Akira Toyamma never made Dragonball Z, He only Made Dragonball, Which is from Goku meets Bulma to Last Tornement with Pan... (After Buu saga)

Isn't in the manga just called Dragon Ball? Maybe the Z it's just cuz it looks cool.

True, Because TOI ANIMATIOS... (Missspelled??)

No Dragonball in the manga is the same as Dragonball in the anime
Dragonball Z in the manga is the same as Dragonball Z in the anime, and BBQ already posted why its Z - IN the U.S

Doragon Bôru Zetto

whats the meaning of Zetto no idea >_<

Well, Even the Japanese started to puplish the Manga as Z now???

The 'Z' does'nt stand for nothing.

Z sword was named after the title and the Z Fighters were names by Akira Torriyama after the Namek Saga on the Manag

Isn't that not in some translations? (I'm not really sure about that one... I can tell what you say is true in Denmark, Germany and Sweeden...

Well the other day I was chatting with Tyro and he brought to my mind that the japanese manga of DBZ was still called Dragonball, they changed it for the anime and added Z in the anime, then the english version was DBZ for the manga and anime, but in Japan the manga is all DB

As I said above, Shoen Jumps started to call it Dragonball Z now...

*facepalm* He did write Dragonball Z, he just didnt name it Dragonball Z that was toei, but it was still his story, same exact thing. Therefore there's no difference.
