this is somewhat of a growing debate in the hockey world, as u may or may not know hockey is Canada's national sport, but there are far more American teams in the NHL than Canadian (24-6 to be exact) Although it is a good time for the NHL in the United states. Since 1992.. - there have been 8 new NHL teams opened in 8 Americans cities -2 Canadian teams have moved to the U.S (*due to financial problems, poor T.V contracts and other busines oritented reasons) Since 1993.. American cities have been wining the Stanley Cup (until the salary cap came into effect) Americans (obviosuly) had more money than Canadians, bought the best players and made amazing teams, hence ( i.e: Detroit, Colorado, New Jersey) now that the salary cap is in effect, Canadian Cities now have a bigger selection of players, in the past 2 yrs the Stanley Cup final features 2 Canadian teams. Edmonton in 2006, loosing to Carolina in a hard fought 7 game seires. While The Anaheim Ducks beat the Ottawa senators in 5 this past june. So, once again until September 30th Hockeys's Championship prize will once again stay below the canadian border in the U.S of A. but wait! despite the teams well being, we see the lack of team support a team can earn in the U.S. for example, the New Jersey Devils (Atlantic Division Champs) finished last season 2nd to last in that category, and i notice in this forum nobody rlly tlks bout hockey (then again no1 posts in the sports section so this is anyone's game) now do Americans really appreciate the growth of the sport. Discus away nieghbour Americans *Don't tell me you ppl in England didn't know that for the first time in history there will be an NHL game being played in europe, it'll be held In London on September 30th and then another on October 1st |

Hah, long time no see my friend...Just felt like stopping by and I saw this Hockey has been my favorite sport for as long as I can remember but it is dying fast. No one really cares about it anymore. Ratings are going down and more people are watching the crap that is known as basketball. Not enough marketing for it. I go to school in Connecticut and can't watch my amazing New York Rangers. At least with mlb.tv you can watch your favorite baseball teams out of state but no nhl.tv |

It is truly sad that hockey isn't a big sport here because it is my 2nd favorite sport, and I love playing it. Fortunately, I can watch my New York Rangers w00p. If soccer wasn't in my family's blood and was not my passion, I would have likely continued to play hockey. The problem with hockey is that there are not enough youth teams for it especially in the tri state area. The only hockey you see around here is on the streets where I played. Ice rinks are harder to comby than basketball courts, soccer fields, etc. If one wants to play in an ice rink, they have to be on a team or pay a substantial amount of money to get time on the ice. Hockey is an entertaining sport to watch, but it starts during a bad part of the year where the American past times such as World Series Baseball and NFL are at their peaks. Even basketball does not get attention at this part of the year. It is not until January or February that people begin to tune into basketball fulltime. The main thing hockey fans can do is continue to support the sport. Perhaps one day people will realize that it is a sport worth watching. |
