Yesterday we discussed Manhunt 2's AO rating, and what it meant for the game's retail outlook. Gamespot points out that effectively an AO rating means that the game will never be released in the first place.
Quote:

"Both [Nintendo and Sony] forbid licensed third-party publishers from releasing games rated AO for Adults Only on their various hardware platforms. Though Manhunt 2 isn't slated for any of Microsoft's systems, the company has also confirmed that it does not allow AO-rated titles on the Xbox or Xbox 360. The sole exception to this rule was in 2005 when the already released Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was retroactively rated AO, at which point retailers pulled it from shelves and Take-Two suspended production of the game."

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

No! Adults play games too! They should be allowed to play the game if they want!

I voted no, but there are some instances where it could. We just havebn't reached that point yet. I think what they're trying to do is protect the kidies but with a "M" rating there should be no problem with it being sold to kids. And an Adukts only rating won't stop the kids from playing it, an adult will just buy it from them.

Ye kno, we really need some really, really pro-censoring person to properly debate this kind of topic.

It does depend on the content, sure being given AO rating might have somthing to do with it but from what I heard, it had a lot of really violant scenes in, should a child pick it up or get hold of it, it could have an impact. Or an adult who is suggestable.

Whatever though, the game won't effect behaviour of most people but it could effect there sleep and possibly some of the things they do if it does have really explicit parts in it. Glorification of some crimes in the game might be seen as too explicit so that means that it can't be sold.

I guess it all depends on what the actual content is, I would have to look into it more to have a yes or no opinion.

I never said that.

The Wii mote makes tennis, golf, baseball, bowling and boxing as close as you can get without the real thing.

Give it a game like Manhunt and people who are skewed already will just become ****ed up.

I dunno if this has been said or not but; it wasn't banned because of te rating.

It was mostly banned because of the Wii version where you have to actually simulate the stabbed & sawing, they thought that was abit OTT and I agree though that's a little too far to take things but still it should be released, end of the day it's an Adult game for ADULTS >> Who make their own decisions.

The point that most people need to understand is that when a product is given an adult only/NC-17 rating it should only be used by adults but the children can get into it, and parents today don't seem to want to be parents and make sure that the kids don't get into it.

Some people are unstable and prmoting such a violent and disturbing game could unbalance their minds leading to killings etc. There is argument that games just give new ideas to those already twisted.

Its just a theory but people not all there could be pulled into such a game.

Did you not read this:

Bans and certification difficulties

The BBFC has refused to certify the PlayStation 2 and Wii editions of Manhunt 2, meaning that it will be illegal to sell the game in the United Kingdom[7] in its current state.[8]

The Irish Film Censor's Office announced that the game would also not be available for sale in the Republic of Ireland.[9]This is the first time a video game has been refused certification by the IFCO.[10]Italian Communications Minister Paolo Gentiloni described it as, "cruel and sadistic, with a squalid environment and a continuous, insistent encouragement to violence and murder."[11]

Manhunt 2 would have been released uncut in Scandinavia with an 18+ PEGI certificate if not for Take-Two's suspension.[12][13]

In the United States the game has received an Adults Only rating from the ESRB. Many American retailers will not carry AO rated titles[14] and both Nintendo and Sony have policies prohibiting third-party AO rated titles from appearing on their consoles.[15][16]

In response to the BBFC and ESRB's decisions, Take-Two has temporarily suspended the release of Manhunt 2 while they evaluate their options.[17]

This means that they can either release it in Scandinavia for a very poor profit (which they can't because of Nintendo's policies against AO titles), or modify the game unti it no longer has an AO rating (this would probably mean they have to extensively redesign the game, most likely causing a massive drop in the game's cash input/output ratio if they actually do this), or release it for PC (same as above, except they have even more issues with OS compatibility, controls, and such.).

So, your reasons for being pro-ban on this game for everyone (well, every Adult) are:

  • a very small number people may become psychotic
  • saying that the game is crap when you have never played yourself (Unless you can show otherwise, but I doubt it).
There are horror movies that are more violent than almost every video game ever created, yet it's the video games (that are usually much less violent) that get all the bad hype.[/color]

I'm just gonna give my stock answer for just about every situation: People ... are ... stupid.

And, yes I'm including you in there too. And don't worry, my name's at the top of the list with all those gold stars next to it (oh yeah, these gold stars are not a good thing).

Now, if you want to say ban the game on moral grounds for it's content, it's a game about violently and viciously killing people, then you're in the green here. But at the same time we would have to also take a solid stand against violence in other media. And you would have to do it there first, because it seems to me that those are much much worse than any experience a mere video game can produce.

If you're on the anti- side because it's a interact experience then you don't play many video games. First off if you own a Wii you'd know that it's not that recreative in the things you have to do. It's much more on the side of subtle movements for the most part, any more and you're over exerting yourself and probably not even getting a better score for it. And I think that a lot of people are forgeting that there were many arcade games that had people using lifelike guns to kill people (Silent Scope), but when you left the arcade did you feel a need to shoot someone in the head? Or, after playing hours of that racing game did that have any adverse effects on you?

Now, I have heard of people who have had marathon sessions with racing titles and gotten speeding tickets, but these are very very rare and minute compared to the number of people who have come out of a theater from viewing a racing movie and accidents ensued as they were trying to emulate what the observed in the film. This takes me back to the other media of entertainment and how we would have to clean it up first.

A “M” for mature rating should be enough to alert consumers that the product is not intended for the kiddies.
