This is exactly how the topic sounds. I want to here some valuable reasons on which is better and why. Lets get some good debating going on.

You seem to be making quite a bit of "Old x vs New x" topics lately. Why not make an "Old Media vs New Media" topic in general instead?

Specifically, what factors determine which anime is better over another anime? Originality? Music? Story? Popularity? The skill of the creators?

Personally, I don't think the concept of an "anime being better than another" exists beyond the realm of opinions (if it exists at all). Besides, what makes an anime "better" than another tends do differ with different generations and perceptions (usually originality and emotional appeal), making it especially impossible to disprove to a particular person or persons that an anime isn't better than another since people have slightly different ways at determining what makes an anime better than another.

Basically, you can't say an anime is better than another without being biased towards a particular attribute or attributes (e.g., originality); it's a matter of opinion.

But if I had to say which is better, then it's definitely the first anime shows I watched-- which were old-- because they were original, appealed to me emotionally, and are the anime I compare everything else to (generally, the first good thing you experience is the thing you consider the best).

Epsilonite made a good point there.

To me, there are a few elementel criteria , which allow you to give a basic statement about the quality of a show.

You can judge the producing quality, if you have the knowledge and information you need. It is pretty easy to judge anime quality, as some of them are drawn badly, especially some of the old ones. You might say that judging the drwaing quality also is a very subjectiv thing, but let me explain that a little further.

Look at some episodes of DBZ. Some of them are drawn perfectly, the characters look the way they should. Other episodes look like they were rushed, so that the characters are less detailed and even the backgrounds look poor.

So, you can judge the constant drawing quality here in a very objective way.
I'll give you an example.

Badly drawn character:

Properly drawn Gohan:

The last episode came closely after the previous one. So you should now understand what I mean.

There are a few other cinematic things which can be judged, like cuts, camera angles and perspectives. With a little knowledge about art and cinema art, you can say what camera techniques are just well or badly.

You can also judge the story, the tension, which is build up due to some specific events. You could go even further and think about how the characters are developed in the show: Goku for example, along with Vegeta etc. are very well developed characters with their specific abilities and mistakes.

I could go on forever, but I'd just repeat what Epsilonite already stated.

It is one of the rules. It just came to my attention that some people don't think about that much.

Not against you Tray, your just an example.

I agree with both Rev and Epsilonite. Though I can't say why without just saying what they both said.

I like newer anime's though. They seem to go into more detail about the characters emotions, thoughts and feelings. The older ones seem to accoiate(Yep spelling I know) specific characters to emotions(Example is Broly - Hatred,Rage)and nothing else whereas now characters seem to change emotions more often to give them a more in-depth feeling. The newer ones also go into more detail on Background. And over time not just through one episode or chapter in the manga's case.

An example of this is Sasuke's past from Naruto compared with Mirai Trunks from DBZ. With Sasuke's they wen't over his past over a number of episodes with gaps in between them, whereas with Mirai Trunks they did it all at once

I'm not a wicked hardcore anime fan. I only watch a select few. But I seem to enjoy older anime's because most of the newer ones are too futuristic for me.

I know I'm probably going to get yelled at for this, but I think Naruto is overated. I find it too kiddish. The episodes I saw never seemed to be serious.
