They should have gone super saiyan at a much younger age so they could get stronger when they were older. It wouldn't have been useless. It would have been interesting to see. All the other characters should have developed their powers too. Trunks, Goten, and Gohan should have been much stronger than they were. Gohan, Trunks, and Goten were powerful when they were younger, and were able to keep up with the adults Gohan especially. So no I don't see it as useless. By the logic of Goten and Trunks, Bra and Pan should have been able to go super saiyan at an even younger age than Goten and Trunks.

Wait what about Vegeta and Goku cause they did not turn super saiyan until they were older and they still ended up powerful and It depends which Trunk your talking about cause Future Trunk did not turn super saiyan until he was a little bit older not as,old as Goku and Vegeta but older than gohan was.

supposedly, AT said during an interview that the only reason ther were no female super saiyans was because he couldn't figure out how to draw them. this would mean that, technically, pan and bra were ssj (or mssj, for pan) during the end of dbz, because AT was trying to think of how to draw them that way, it just wasn't shown on panel.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

I do indeed remember that he said something along those lines.
Also i think Pan's strength at eoz could be the result of inheriting the Mystic genes from Gohan which could also explain her not being a SSJ.

pan definitely does train. we don't know about bra because no detail was given about her in dbz.

but in gt, she does know how to fly, at least, so she has the basics. and she would have been born stronger than goten and trunks were, and should have attained ssj as easily as them.
