then a particular empire was the strongest, then a century later it could be a different empire, buit i was going for every empire at it's heyday

yeah.. I know what you mean, but we could've ended the debate saying the Roman Empire is the best empire ever made because it's 'heyday' was big and it last 1000? years. During the Spaniard's prime Europe was full of superpowers as you know. And Spain landed on top.
in other words you could say (Example)
in 2002 the standings are
Man Utd. 90 pts
Chelsea 20
Liverpool 20
Arsenal 20

or 2007
Man U 60
Chelseas 59
Arsenal 55
..

which club is better? sure the 2002 Man U was more DOMINANT over the other teams, but the 2007 squad when there was alot more competetive teams in the league, and that squad was still on top

So is Australia. Kevin Rudd's the man.

oh yeah.. thats the thing about us Canadians and Australians.. and the only diference between australia and canada is that you suck @ hockey and you still have that British flag on your flag.. scrap it, you deserve to LOL.

you've got what i'm trying to say, but i still think there's no definite answer for the greatest empire, and i don't think it all depends on the biggest or strongest empire, if we were talking about advances in technology, then it would possibly be America for creating the internet,
or perhaps Macedonia is the greatest empire considering how much it conquered for it's size, or mesopotamia for creating democracy ( i know it's credited as being a greek discovery but originally it came from mesopotamia)so for me , there will be no definite answer, though you make a good example with the more dominant teams, ut it's easier with something like that, because you can judge them on the same thing, but with empires, there's just so many different aspects to think about

edit: one thing that's funny, is the fact that the spanish empire indirectly funded the British Empire

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

My personal opinion, although it is biased because I have a strong interest in the subject, is that the Roman Empire was the strongest.

They conquered a massive amount of land that would have been a challenge such as Gaul, Spain and parts of Africa. They also made significant advancements in military tactics and general advances in technology, politics and every day life.

Also, in Julius Caesar, they had one of the greatest Generals and Emperors in history.

Another great empire was the Mongolian Empire at it's peak when led by Genghis Khan. I think that was good enough to have been mentioned.

Well, you can,, i mean think about it this way.
-Spanish had alot of power during a time dominated by world domination.. the world was a game of RISK and Spain won.
-Rome controlled more than Spain.. but, during that time, who was gonna stop them? farmers?
-Germany/Japan/Italy were progressing far in a matter of years, until the allies stopped them. I guess you could say they could have used manage counselling.
and to be honest I 4got about the Soviets.. as much as I hate their hockey, i gotta admit, what they had running in the 20th century comes close to what the Spaniards had going in the 1700's.. but I wouldn't change my vote.

Roman and British empires where probably the strongest of the respective times, as where several others, at the times they where around, though you don't really get empires now, allies yes but it's not really possible to get empiers due to UN regulations I belive or something like that.

I dunno.

true, but the spanish armada when it attacked England, had 130 ships,
which truly is massive

problem was though, most of the fleet were converted merchant ships, better suited to carrying cargo than engaging in warfare at sea. They were broad and heavy, and could not maneuver quickly under sail.

The armada also had 30, 943 men, another staggering amount, but the design of most of the english ships to the spanish ones were superior, which resulted in a victory for the english, also, the leader of the english navy at the time, sir Francis Drake, was more knowleadgable about sea warfare, than the leader of the spanish fleet, the duke of median sodina, who was a aproven soldier and tactician but had no background in sea warfare, and requested to be dismissed from the spanish invasion

The Spanish Armada may have been defeated by England, but their reign of power remained strong throughout the next century.

Quote:

Historians now recognize that the Armada campaign did not have lasting consequences upon the naval balance of power. In fact it led the Spanish Navy undergoing a major reform which helped it to continue dominating European waters well into the next century.

There were other battles that England attempted to defeat Spain and were unsuccessful.

Quote:

However, an attempt in the following year to press home the English advantage failed when an English Armada met a similar fate, limping home after being held by the Spanish on the coasts of Portugal. The supply of troops and munitions from England to Philip II's enemies in the Netherlands and France continued, and high seas buccaneering against the Spanish persisted, but with dwindling success.

Here are some graphs of what some empires owned.
