Master Roshi is known as the Turtle Hermit. He is a master of martial arts and is also a teacher. He lives in the middle of the ocean on an island called "Kame House". Master Roshi's age is over 300. Through those years he trained extensively and became very wise. He went conquered feets that many people tackled and failed. One, being able to climb Korin's Tower. It took him a few years to be able to get the water Korin held but he did it. He soon became the strongest human on Earth, but that soon changed. He is also related to Baba who helps Goku and his friends later in their quests to find a Dragonball.

In Dragonball Master Roshi first appeared when Goku rescued his turtle. He gave Bulma and Goku the dragonball which was hung around his neck. Later he took Goku in as a pupil and said that he might some day surpass him. Later he took in Krillin and trained them both. He founded the move "Kamehameha" which later used as useful moves by his pupils. After training for a while he entered a the World Martial Arts tournament which his pupils entered. Though he entered as Jackie Chan so no one knew it was him. He defeated Goku in the first Martial Arts tournament. In the tournament we finally see Master Roshi's true strength and it is quite impressive. He does moves such as the Kamehemeha, After-Image technique, hypnosis, and is able to read people's minds.

Later on in the series King Piccolo threatens to conqueor the world. Master Roshi once fighting him before many years before steps in the ring (not virtually) again to challenge him. Knowing he can't defeat him he used a move that his master used to contain the evil Piccolo; the Evil Containment Wave (Mafuba wave in Japanese and manga). The reason he hesitated at first to use it is because once you use it you die. He died the move on King Piccolo but missed the bottle which traps the opponent and he fell to the ground and died. His pupil, Goku, got revenge on King Piccolo and defeated him.

Master Roshi appears again later in Dragonball as a retired fighter. He is shown again throughout Dragonball Z and Dragonball GT.

In Dragonball he was great because he is the one who got Goku started and prepared him to become one of the most elite fighters in the universe.

I think he was a great character for comical purposes in Z. Too bad Goten and Trunks were born and took all the comedy scenes for themselves.

I liked Master Roshi when he disguised himself as Jackie Chun in Dragonball and fought Goku, those were good episodes. :)

Lol, not all of the time. Remember the episode during the Buu Saga when Chi Chi, Videl, Bulma, Yamcha, Eighteen, and Roshi are all out hunting down the Dragon Balls? Heh, and old Pervert Muten Roshi may be, and a retired Martial arts master, but he can certainly take out large dinosaurs with a bang.

I found the episode to be a, ehem, gas ;)

Anyway, Muten Roshi doesn't bother me as a character, and the ladies do well for themselves in keeping him in line. Besides, who else can we depend on for regular noes bleeds?

Master Roshi was important in Dragonball. But in Dragonball Z, not so much. He's a funny charater and is only in Dragonball Z for humor.
