My favourite genre of retro game is the old turn based RPGS like Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy.

I really recommend Shining Force CD. It's for the Sega CD and it's amazing.

Shining Force 1 and Shining Force CD were awesome. Shining Force 2 and 3 sucked balls, but I never gave them a proper chance.

Shining Force 2 was too long and had too many characters.

I enjoyed Shining Force 3 from the little I played of it. It was just difficult to get past the blocky graphics.

I still believe Shining Force > Shining Force CD. What I enjoyed better about the first one is that you get to travel through cities, interact with people or objects, find Easter eggs etc. In Shining Force CD, there's too little time between battles, the 'rest place' in-between is just the same camp-shop template.

It was surprising to me that there was no walking about in it this time. But then the music and the battles in SFCD are much better than the first Shining Force. So it made up fir it in my opinion.

Did you ever play the precursor, Shining in the Darkness?

I tried it, yes, but after playing Shining Force, it's hard to get used to 1st person 3D gameplay where I can't see my character at all. I really love the cutscenes with the attacks and stuff in SF and SFCD.

And yes, the music is better in SFCD and the fights are kind of easy in normal mode. I want to replay it in super hard (no pun intended) mode.

I really enjoy the lingering around in SF. I find it distracting how they placed the chests in which one can loot, on the battlefield, in SFCD.

Besides, the Easter eggs are nice. Did you know that there's a chest where you can find swimming suits for Tao and Anri and you can have them fighting in bikinis? Or there are secret characters that you can find in bushes, samurais I believe.

edit: yes the music is way better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFcYKfLbe8s&index=6&list=PLE05BB1938FC54CC7

Age of Empires 1 was great. I still have the original disk somewhere.

Bullet hell is one of my favorites. Even though I'm terrible at them.

I don't neccesarily have a favorite but there's definitely genres that used to be popular and don't exist anymore that I miss and like to revist with retro games. Stuff like car combat games, old school survival horror, and virtual pets/raising games ( I guess including stuff like Princess Maker and Wonder Project J).

Like bullet hell games, JRPGs, and strategy RPGs are still coming out. And many of them are splendid. Like a Shining Force fan can play Banner Saga. Or a Phantasy Star fan can try out Cosmic Star Heroine. Like Bullet Hell? Try out Crimzon Clover WORLD IGNITION. But where do I go if I like Twisted Metal? Or Silent Hill?

Or really unique titles that are basically their own genre but never got build upon, like Trap Gunner.
