So President Trump has directed the Department of Defense to establish a "space force".

I put this topic in the Deep Discussion section for two reasons: To comment on this political leader's action and to discuss if humans are at the point where we reasonably need to prepare for combat in outer space.

PS: When he said "separate but equal" my blood boiled. I know he wasn't talking about race and discrimination but that is where my mind immediately went.

Sounds like an ego project to me. Who do we need a space force against? Clangers?

I guess now's a good time to watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes so I know how this'll play out.

No but seriously, what does this do? Who is this defending against? Is it because other countries are doing this so we're going to do it as defense? Which would make sense. But I've never heard of this kind of thing, so I have no idea what's going on.

Sci-Fi has laid claim to this realm of warfare. But true physics and aeronautics aren't even close to being on par with some of the things that Authors dream up.
If your single man spacecraft gets hit with anything while you're flying off somewhere, it will obliterate the vessel. If it doesn't immediately explode, it will spin the vessel uncontrollably at a G-Force the body can't handle. So you'll pass out first, and then die of explosion.

The International Space Station has had to move itself 2 times since it has been in orbit to avoid space debris. If even a single piece of debris hit the station, it would slam into the side of it at over 1000mph and blow a hole in the side. Just a thought.

Otherwise you're talking about Orbit Cannons and Launchers. This would start a space-arms race.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I'm not against the idea but using it to fight each other would be incredibly stupid.

I think it would be wise to make space weaponry just in case, preferably powerful stuff because if we ever did need to defend ourselves hopes and wishes aren't going to achieve anything.
For all our military might we'd have to hope aliens would be kind enough to invade the planet and not just poison the atmosphere from a distance or something.

And other than that at literally any moment right now an asteroid could appear and we'd really only have nukes to fire at it which probably wouldn't do much if we could even launch them that far.
It would be wise to work on weaponry that actually functions in space properly but I think this is something that absolutely has to be part of a unified project where every country that matters agrees it's for the good of the whole planet, not one country.

We have aliens living among us already.

I'm cool with this. More weapons, more power.

Actually something like that race from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 would be cool, that would be a solid way of defending our planet while limiting loss of our life. Not sure how realistic having a live connection over such huge distances would be though, there'd likely be lag.

All in all I'm glad we're venturing in to space more we should have been doing s*** like this years ago.

I was thinking about this a little today and I'm impressed at how much effort that we're willing to put into preparations for war but the relative lack of efforts toward peace.

I would love to see something like what those gold people from Gardian's of the Galaxy did. The only loss would be material items.

To be fair I'm pretty glad we don't because in a world like that it'd take only one aggressive party to do tons of damage.

And then in this scenario if we walked up to aliens barefoot wearing daisy chains they could still just turn in to that delicious food paste they so desire and we'd be wiped out easily.

More likely than not if aliens ever did come here they'd probably kill us anyway, better to go down fighting.

I just hope that if that time ever comes and aliens offer some sort of peace or aren't immediately hostile that our leaders don't just attack them, like in every sci-fi movie ever.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

I guess this comes down to a difference in how we see the world. I'm not saying that being prepared to defend ourselves is not important but I believe that we should have a goal of peace. Peace is very hard, damn near impossible to achieve through war.
