I don't know if it's just me, but having a current gen console just doesn't have the same flair as having one from the last gen when it was current. It just feels like it wasn't as much of an overhaul as the last one, just a minor upgrade. What do you all think?

What, like PS4? I think it's a massive improvement tbh. At least from PS3 that is. I found PS3 gen to be the worst. PS2 is the best and I think it always will be.

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

PS2 was pretty awesome. PS3/Xbox 360 era seems to last forever, but, truthfully? I really loved it. I bought an Xbox One and have played around with a PS4 and... ugh, I just didn't enjoy it very much. My Xbox One largely goes unused and I may sell it to help pay for things around the house or to afford a faster internet connection (my ISP is terrible  )

It's curious. In general, I'm finding myself uninterested in playing a lot of video games lately. Especially of the newer generation. I'm sticking to WoW, but, even that gets tired and old and I find myself logged in but not actually playing at least 75% of the time. This is all anecdotal, of course, but, gaming in general seems to be something that I don't get too enthused about anymore. It could be maturation, or it could be something else entirely.

I never played much PS3, 360 or Wii. So in a way, what on Earth am I doing posting in this topic?!

The 360 seemed to be mostly shooting games. The PS3 and the Wii had more variety. The Wii was very affordable, but also offered a new experience with its motion controls (the PS3 also had their own version too, I know. I think the PS3's came first). It had family friendly party games like Smash, Mario Kart and Wii Sports, plus continuations of classics like Zelda, Metroid and Kirby. There were some RPGs and games with a darker tone (like Resident Evil and Madworld), but for those kinds of games the PS3 was a better bet, with stuff like Metal Gear, Yakuza and Ratchet & Clank. There were some intuitive games like Little Big Planet.

This gen has even more good little indie games than the last gen, since more people are involved in game development. I mean games like Undertale and Stardew Valley. There are shooters, sports games, mystery games, RPGs and just as much variety as before I think. That said, a lot of the games are just PS3 or PS Vita ports. How far into the PS4's life we are I'm not sure - maybe there's only two or three years left. Maybe we'll see its strongest releases in the next couple of years. The Switch seems to have a lot of decent games - more so than the WiiU or maybe even Wii. The Xbox One is just....nowhere to be seen.

As far as the consoles themselves go, I don't know because I didn't play enough of the last gen. The PS4 trailer for FFXV blew me away when I first saw it, like no graphics in gaming ever have.

So yeh, maybe you have a point. Idk.

I grew up with Sega Mega Drive so that's what I find most entertaining. Don't get me wrong, every gen has some great games but that 16 bit era is my jam.

All things are better when you're younger and have less responsibility. Plus time feels relative to your age, the older you are, the smaller a percentage of your life an entire year is, so you spent an entire summer playing your favourite PS2 game and it felt like a long, fun period of your life, now to me it seems like the PS4 came out like 5 minutes ago.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I don't think it's anything to do with hardware but with innovation/the scope games have.

There are very few games that try to do anything different.

In PS2 era it was mostly basic linear story games, not much open besides the likes of GTA but even then still quite limited.

Come last gen and games opened up a lot, suddenly we had so many huge worlds to explore, so much better graphics and a lot more potential.

This generation, on the whole, is just very "more of the same" games haven't improved a whole lot they've just done the same things again and achieved similar or more success due to there just being more gamers in general.

Not to mention all the bulls*** monetization tactics and the dumbing down of games in general so that they please a wider audience for maximum profit, when you do crap like that you make your games much less satisfying to anyone who's played literally one other video game.
Games stopped trying to just be fun for the most part, they found their formulas and never evolved since.

Ever notice how most talk about new games is 99% about how new the graphics are? Basically nothing else just "new" mechanics which more often than not are borrowed from other games.

From a hardware standpoint, there's such a thing as diminishing returns in console gaming. Superficially, each successive generation is going to feel like less of an upgrade than the last. Just compare the jump from the 8/16-bit era to the N64/Playstation era to the jump from the PS3/X360 era to the current era and you'll notice the obvious difference.

(VR was supposed to be a big deal this gen, a major differential, but almost nobody I know cares about it.)

As far as the actual quality of the games goes, though, I find that has been little change, specially if you evaluate older games with the appropriate context in mind instead of writing them off as "dated".

And what superperfectnerd said stands true. As you grow older, entertainment like gaming might grow less appealing and/or become a smaller part of your life.

(Obviously, that's not true for everyone, but I'd say it is for me.)

It is for me as well. I have very little interest in gaming these days.

Yup. It is getting harder and harder to make better hardware. I don't know if Moore's law affects console, but I assume it does since they're essentially computers. But with how the space is getting smaller than even an HIV virus, the hardware jump from PS3 to PS4 isn't as big as, say PS1 to PS2.

Anyways, I've been disinterested in games in general. Not just current gen or previous generations. Latest gen console I own is a Wii, which is fun when you're playing multiplayer games.. Which is what my gaming life has essentially boiled down to.

I wouldn't say it's really anything to do with age either, it can be a factor sure but your tastes and interests change.

I've played like 5 Assassins Creed games, why would I care about playing another one that's exactly the same thing? People like new experiences, since a lot of games are just recycled sequels or pretty directly copy other games, there aren't a lot of "new" experiences no matter how technically new a game is.

I don't find New Gens that exciting, I haven't since the 360/PS3 days. I usually pick up one or two consoles every 3-4 years and have fun with that. I am still finding fun in the Wii U, though I tend to play older games.

When I played PS3, switching to PS4 didn't feel the same as going from 2 to 3. They improved some things, but the layout is extremely similar. I haven't really done much with Xbox One though.

Ah I see what you mean. I was thinking more in terms of games that are released. I didn't have my PS4 long until I had more games than my PS3. As minimal of an improvement PS3 to PS4 may seem. I think if they ever do a PS5 (which I'm pretty sure is confirmed) it'll be even less of a difference.

Yeah it absolutely will, the PS4 has 34x more RAM than the PS3 for one thing, there's no way anything can increase on the PS5 to that degree. Technology just isn't there for that kind of a jump.

I'm still hoping for hybrid consoles.

If Sony can give me a modular PlayStation that gives me the simplicity of a console but lets me upgrade at my leisure and have the power of a PC then they have my money forever.

How cool would that be? It's pretty daunting venturing in to PC upgrading, if I could just buy the next CPU upgrade and slot it in that'd be golden.

The only issue there is the games themselves and the lack of generational exclusivity, I guess they would just have to flat out say no your PlayStation/Xbox can't run this game unless you have this level of power.
