Before you read this lenghty summary of Piccolo, go check out the Piccolo Appreciation Thread made by Son-Goku. Alright, let's get to it! Piccolo is considered, throughout the manga and anime(s), an anti-hero. While initially a villain, he was never really shown to be as ruthless as King Piccolo was, though that may have come down to Goku stopping him from unleashing hell on Earth. Even so he could've probably been more chaotic by terrorizing Earth's cities and citizens, but instead chose to develop techniques in private so he could defeat Goku. An unexpected truce with Goku seemed to turn Piccolo around a bit. While he had intended to continue his evil ways after defeating Raditz, it didn't quite turn out that way. Goku's son Gohan softened Piccolo a lot, and while Gohan considered himself a failure in Piccolo's eyes, the namekian was quite proud of the young half-Saiyan. He was harsh and ultimative towards Gohan during the fight against the Saibamen and Nappa, but ultimately sacrificed himself to save his friend Gohan. Gohan would never forget this sacrifice. The Saiyan Vegeta revealed Piccolo's true origins by calling him a namekian, which sparked something in Piccolo after death, especially considering the mission Bulma, Krillin and his friend Gohan went on; to retrieve the namekian Dragon Balls. When they had the chance to use the dragon balls, he was adamant he was brought back to life and teleported to Namek. He was obviously curious about the planet and his origins, but never forgot that his friends were in danger. The exploration of his origins took a backseat to helping his friends in the fight against the tyrant Freeza. While the fusion with Nail wasn't enough to defeat Freeza, he was now truly seen as part of the Z-Fighters of Earth. After Freeza's defeat at the hands of Super Saiyan Goku and subsequent final defeat at Super Saiyan Future Trunks, he felt the need to catch up to the fearsome Saiyans. Over the next three years, while waiting for the androids to arrive, he trained with Goku and Gohan, arguably making the greatest gains of them all. He was a force to be reckoned with in the fight against the androids, but they all faced defeat to the younger androids 17 and 18. Piccolo made a very important and difficult decision; He decided he had to fuse with Kami, his other (good) half, to be able to defeat the androids. Kami, on the other hand, had discovered another threat, potentially a much more dangerous enemy. After careful contemplation, Kami decided to let Piccolo fuse with him. They made a deal in where Piccolo kept the appearance and demeanor of what would once again become the Nameless Namekian. With the fusion done, Piccolo grew tenfolds wiser and much stronger. He used this to his advantage in future fights against Cell and Android 17. Despite being much stronger, Cell had used his time and skills wisely to grow even stronger than Piccolo by absorbing countless humans on Earth. While the old Piccolo might've kept his cool, the newly formed fusion of Piccolo and Kami was in complete shock and awe at the intense and pure power of the imperfect form of Cell. This shock almost cost him his life, as he was blasted through the chest and thrown into the ocean. He held on and Goku was able to sense and save him from certain doom. Despite going into the Room of Spirit and Time, he couldn't compete in power with the now Perfect form of Cell. He had to leave this to the Saiyans and, surprising to him, his former prodigy Gohan. He watched as Cell gave Gohan a beating, begging Goku to save him. After spending time with his son in the RoSaT, Goku had seen something the others couldn't. In this moment, Piccolo was more of a father to Gohan than Goku was. However, Goku turned out to be right and soon Gohan achieved the previously thought unobtainable Super Saiyan 2 form. Gohan, with the help of his father and his friends, was able to defeat Cell once and for all and peace returned to Earth, without Goku. Piccolo never stopped training, and 7 years later Gohan was all grown up. Piccolo had taken home at the Lookout and assisted the new guardian Dende and the attendant Popo. At this point, he had stepped back from fighting and taken more of a mentor role to the younger generation. Appearing much wiser, he has taken to meditating and finding his place in the world. As a new threat arose on Earth, he assisted and guided the Saiyans in the fight against Babidi and Majin Boo. When everything seemed futile after seemingly everybody had fallen to Majin Boo and the last hope, the sons of Goku and Vegeta; Goten and Trunks, had used up all their fusion time, he bravely offered to fight Boo so the young Saiyans could escape. Despite not fighting anymore, he was as brave as ever and this hypothetical sacrifice shows how much he had grown as a character over the years. Majin Boo was defeated in the end thanks to a joint effort of Goku, Vegeta and Mr. Satan. Piccolo once again returned to his normal life of meditating and being there for the younger generation to offer advice and tips. His development from would-be-villain at the bequest of his father and former incarnation King Piccolo to a genuine hero of Earth was one of the most drastic ones in the manga and anime. While he was already wise beyond his years, the fusion with Kami made him one of the smartest and most logical beings in the universe. He had a tendency to use tactics and strategy to defeat his enemy, as opposed to someone like Goku or Vegeta who would tackle the enemy head-on. While Goku and Vegeta both are brilliant strategists and geniuses in terms of fighting, Piccolo is no slouch himself and he's probably the most level-headed and logical thinker of the three of them, who, if not for strength, would be considered the top three masters of the universe. It's actually great that they didn't make Piccolo Jr. Daimao's ripoff. He is indeed different from his Sire, he is more reserved and introspect, maybe less cruel, plus Daimao would have never bonded with an Earthling. As I said, I like to believe that Piccolo has his own personality and he's not just the embodiment of whomever fuses with him.
This was an important moment in Piccolo's character development. He was all tsundere around Gohan, telling him he would never save him and smashing him into some rock/putting him down for cowarding-out in front of Nappa, but in the end we realize that he's just a show-off and not as evil as his sire. As for Namek, I believe he was excited at the possibilities his race offers him, battle-wise, but I don't think he gave a general crap about his co-slugs. He even chose to remain on Earth. After his background stopped being relevant, his character slowly faded and his potential remained untapped, in all aspects. Also, he sometimes plays as dummy for some of the show's worst plot-devices. Take this scene for example, why did he let Frieza transform, again? Or Cell? It's like... it's this terrible pun in series and games where you can't touch the opponent while they're doing their thang. Piccolo, inside his core, is cunning, prideful but extremely good-natured and most importantly, the 'different' one. He is the only Namekian among the Z-fighters and he's even more innocent than kid Goku - he looked very confused when the others were joking about Krillin and Android#18 after the Cell Games. It's funny, having this tough, grumpy guy with the naivety of a virgin lol. Although there are evidences against him later in the series, I still find him interesting. |
