Kaiba & Marik vs. Yugi & Joey

Scenario: As fate would have it, the grueling hours Yami Marik had spent waiting for Yugi and the others during their detour in the Virtual World caused the otherwise sane and rational spirit to go insane. Resolved to make the Pharaoh pay for keeping him this long (and the other stuff about prophecy and what-not), Yami Marik does the unthinkable: he offers a temporary alliance with Seto Kaiba during the four-way duel so as to ensure the Pharaoh and his best friend Joey are pitted against one another in the semi-finals. Far be it from Seto to turn down an opportunity to make Wheeler yelp like the dog he is, he, somewhat bemused, accepts so long as Marik swears not to double cross him during the four-way duel. Giving his word, Marik shakes Seto's hand as they turn to face their unsuspecting opponents.

Understandably, Yami Yugi is outraged at how low Kaiba would go so as to punish Joey, and with renewed vigor, Yami resolves to make both Marik and Kaiba pay for their underhanded tactics, by any (legal) means necessary. In a similar vein, Joey finds himself perturbed that Kaiba would side with a freak like Marik just to spite him, and likewise decides to face the two with the full extent of his abilities.

Who wins between these two groups? What will the semi-finals look like?

Restrictions
- No betrayals from either side
- Kaiba & Marik are somewhat OOC (they will work together, but only insofar as it benefits their chance to win, not to save the other from elimination)
- Yugi and Joey are IC & bloodlusted
- Teams can gang up on a weak link if it is advantageous

Round 1: No God cards & no Shadow Games
Round 2: God cards & Shadow Games allowed

Round 1 goes to Kaiba & Marik. They have better cards overall, and Yugi can't protect Joey from Kaiba's beat sticks while Marik is using his torture tactics. I don't think Joey is competent enough at this point to be a huge help to Yugi.

Round 2 is 100% a lock for the antagonists. Slifer the Sky Dragon can't stand up to Obelisk the Tormentor and The Winged Dragon of Ra at the same time, or the latter individually. Joey will offer no help here.

Yeah Joey is a handicap in these matches. Marik almost beat Yugi by himself, same with Kaiba. The two of them together would smash him and Joey.

I actually think Yugi & Joey got this one. The duel against the Labyrinth brothers showed that the two have implacable team work, Something I doubt Kaiba/Marik has. Sure they wouldn't betray each other, but unlike Yugi/Joey, one wouldn't care about the other unless it directly affected him, whereas Yugi and Joey watch each others back, like they would go out of their way to prevent the other from elimination.

This with Joey's insane luck and Yugi's topdecking skill, There's no doubt in my mind that they win. And also, Joey isn't as useless as you think, he almost won against Marik, and always puts a decent match again Yugi and Kaiba.

Round 1:I'd say Marik is more of a handicap to Kaiba than Joey is to Yugi. He's a good duelist, but the show made out so that the most frightening thing about him is Ra. He's a sadist who prolongs the duel instead of getting straight to the point. Team Yugi wins this one.

Round 2:This one is a lot more even, and might actually be in Kaiba's team favor. The shadow games, as we saw in the show, affects the players physically and mentally. By the end of the duel, I'd wager that Marik and Yugi would be the only ones left, and it could go either way.

Marik would have beaten Joey with ease if he didn't underestimate the guy's sheer willpower. Joey has been stomped in every duel against Kaiba, and only did well against Yugi in Duelist Kingdom because of how lawless that era was; their Battle City duel wasn't really a showcase of their true prowess due to outside forces. He's not certifiably on their level until the Orichalcos arc.

Joey isn't fodder, but he doesn't offer a whole lot of power here. He would be more of a liability than anything, and Yugi would probably be subconsciously protecting him. Meanwhile, Kaiba and Marik are extremely competent on their own, and their styles compliment one another to a fairly decent degree. Kaiba wields the heavy hitters and deck destruction while Marik can put up a broken defense while chipping away at Life Points or forcing a deck-out. Ra isn't even necessary for Marik to be incredibly dangerous.

Really? It does seem that he's very close to their level. Sure Marik was underestimating him, but the guy has defaults and would drag a duel just to torture his opponents. Joey's deck is poor compared to Kaiba but his sheer luck makes up for it.

And as I said, while individually he's not on their level, he has an excellent team with Yugi. meanwhile I don't think Kaiba's and Marik's deck compliment each other well. One is a straight beatdown deck and the other is a defensive deck made for the sake of sadism.
