It's so beautifully shot and has the most exhilarating blend of grotesque and visceral with existential questions pertaining to loss of innocence, longing for acceptance and finding your identity. It's arguably a little limited plot-wise, but works brilliantly as a gaudy, surrealistic metaphor for growing up and all the turbulence that comes with it. I really enjoyed it. Here's the trailer in case you're interested. It's filled with (glorious) gory imagery, so be warned.

Chiaroscuro ♥ Posts: 17,000 Group: Rock Princess Member #1,750 Joined: September 24, 2006	It's not overly gory, I wouldn't say. The gore it actually shows in the movie is quite tame -- it's more implied than anything. But it does have some cool disturbing shots.

Fire fox Favourite Manga Gantz	I've never heard of this and the trailer is quite different from many mainstream movies, which isn't a bad thing. From the trailer it seems to me that the plot would be a little weak and you (Strawberry) confirm that ("limited") for me. With that in mind though, this seems like one of those movies that I would watch during summer vacation or when I'm really bored. I'll definitely give it a chance.

I say the plot is limited because it's not one of those super elaborate movies that has a very structured composition and where the story sort of progresses into a climax of sorts. It doesn't have one of those classic Hollywood build ups plot wise and is generally more artistic and abstract as far as storytelling goes. Fire fox Favourite Manga Gantz	I have a 3 day weekend coming up and the movie is only $4 to rent, so I'll set some time aside probably Saturday or Sunday night and give it a watch. Edit: The first spoiler tag contains my reactions as the movie was playing. The second spoiler is a brief overall reaction, immediately after finishing the movie. I wasn't ready Eating a raw rabbit kidney and taking a shot as part of the hazing No one took a shower or changed their clothes after being covered in blood? The elders take their role really seriously - throwing beds out the window (more than once), rookies have to keep their head down, I'm really interested in the fact that this is a veterinary school and they serve meat. It is almost like a doctor eating humans. (Ethics) Early on Julie challenged her classmates' opinion on rape of a monkey saying that it was comparable to rape of a woman. Yo! She ate her sister's (Alex) finger!! Alex said that Julie "quickly ate my finger" and there was no reaction from their parents. I wonder if they thought that was a joke. Alex jumped in front of a car...why? Alex eats people too? Is the family Vegetarian because they're genetically cannibalistic...or vampires lol Blue girl, yellow boy. "Don't come out until you're both green...lol. She bit him! She needs some help with this addiction. I was actually laughing during the sex scene. Julie was really trying to eat him lol. The way Julie wears Alex's dress changes throughout the movie as she becomes more promiscuous and blood thirsty. Professor what's his name has got to be the worst professor ever. He needs to learn how to talk to people. Why did Alex do that to her sister (the video where she taunts a drunk Julie to bit a dead person's finger). She ate his leg!! The family knew about this genetic problem and didn't warn their daughters about it or try to help them find a way to deal with it before college??? Actually...they did. Being Vegetarians was the way but the hazing process exposed the girls to meat and they were unable to turn back. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is why you don't become a vegetarian! Initial Reactions As my first spoiler indicates, I was not mentally prepared for what I saw. I knew I was going to see some blood but the context in which I saw it was really powerful. Seeing Julie eat Alex's finger was an absolute shocker! The lack of outrage and confusion from the family when they found out confused me initially but the ending clarified things for me. On a side note, although it was not the main focus of the movie, the ethical dilemma of eating meat as a person intending to a veterinarian was something that I never thought of before. Using an extreme analogy, I compared it to a general practice medical doctor eating human beings. It's likely that their ethical charge to do no harm is limited to their professional work, otherwise all Veterinarians would have to be Vegans. I don't have time to write a whole bunch right now but overall, would say that this movie was worth the watch. Oh, wait, one more thing! When the dad began to reveal that the mom has the same problems as Alex and Julie, I noticed that his upper lip had a scar. I don't know if it was always there but it immediately reminded me of when Julie and some guy were covered in paint and she bit him. The end. Edited by Green, May 27 2018, 01:37 PM.
