Silent Hill 2 was too much for me. Feels like you're being chased all the time.

After watching so many horror movies it's nearly impossible for me to get scared, and jumpscare filled garbage isn't scary, jumpscares just surprise you.

Pelador already mentioned Silent Hill, though there's more horror to that game than what he brought up, so I'll mention something else.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent and SOMA do a good job at building up great horror atmosphere with really good stories to keep you interested. There are a few jumpscarey moments here and there but they're acceptable. The monster designs are really good too.

That's bull. The surprise is apart of it, but it can still be scary.

Oh yeah Amnesia. That was scary too but the fps viewpoint made me feel too nauseas to keep playing.

With a good ambiance, yes, that's why the likes of SCP-087-B are scary, because of the sounds, music and the environment. Though I still wouldn't call it scary because it's such a nothing game, even if the simplicity also helps in making it scary for players.

I'm talking about stuff like the Five Nights at Freddy's games where you can see most of the jumpscares coming as soon as the first night begins, though maybe those are moreso made for people who suffer furry phobia. It's one of those games that is more fun to watch people play than to play it yourself imo.

90% of what makes a jumpscare surprising these days is the loud noise that goes with it, not the horrifying monster or the impending doom that has now reached your face.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Yeah jumpscares are a fright, not genuine terror or tension from something scary. Like someone clapping in front of your face suddenly, makes you jump but it's not piss your pants scary.

From the days when Resident Evil was actually scary I can still never get over Nemesis in Resident Evil 3, dudes f***ing terrifying and a near constant threat, you never know where he'll be and you suddenly need to change your plan of action if he appears, which is especially scary if he pops up in a zone you've never visited.
Or if you have basically no ammo.
Or if you "Kill" him and loot around the room and he gets up again, Jesus f***!
It's even terrifying to have "Killed" him, went out the room and then come back just to find a blood stain but no body, you're left thinking s*** he has to be in the next room then...sometimes he is...
AND SOMETIMES HE HAS A GOD DAMN ROCKET LAUNCHER

I think with all horror games eventually you get used to the scares and they no longer have any affect what so ever, for me I feel like Resident Evil 3 held me the longest in that regard.
Outlast was scary too but eventually it just gets kind of annoying.

Outlast is good too, though I'd say it aims more towards being disturbing than being scary, what with all the mangled and nude imagery that makes it seem like Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Arkham Asylum. Probably just me though, lord knows youtubers make it seem like the scariest game ever. Or rather, pretty much every horror game they play. Looking at you, Markiplier.

The RE series at its prime was a good example of jumpscares done right, because the jumpscare didn't one shot you or did nothing like in so many indie games these days, a friggin' undead doberman jumped through a window and tore your innards out of your belly and you had the choice to run like a coward or stay and get killed like a coward. From RE4 onwards is probably where the action took over and the horror element diminished. Probably just in the case of us spaniards but it's really silly to hear mexican voice actors through what are essentially villagers from Spain, it kinda breaks the immersion.

Though RE4 had the Regenerators, and screw those things.

Yeah those f***ers were legitimately creepy, honestly I think they were wasted on the action packed nature of 4, though it is a great game.

And then they pretty much copied those in 7, which is really kind of a bad game in my opinion, people say it's the scariest one but it's all jumpscares and they're all laughably predictable.
I remember sitting watching a playthrough and the player turned a corner and was walking down a corridor, said to myself "Someone's going to break through that wall"
Lo and behold the dad of the family did. Exciting.

I applaud RE7 for going back the classic RE route of being stuck in what is essentially a haunted mansion.

I really liked the Baker family, they've become some of my favourite RE villains and Jack in particular is one of the toughest bastards in all of RE period.

Scary movies don't bother me usually, but with games I'm a wuss. Even non-horror games like Call of Duty scare me on some level, since I know I'm gonna get shot. I don't wanna go around the corner and lose all my progress - even Resident Evil is mostly only scary for me due to not wanting to have to replay everything.

The scariest game I've played was probably Silent Hill. Honestly, I just can't play it. There are games online that I've watched that were scary or in some cases just really spooky, like Amnesia, Ib, Ao Oni and The Cat Lady. Games like "Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors" are scary in a creepy way, which is more impactful for me personally, since it kind of gives my mind this weird clear feeling, almost like my brain is saying "wtf is life?". I had a similar feeling when I watched a video of some animal being skinned alive.

Layers of Fear, P.T., nobody around here?

Layers of Fear actually has a beautiful story behind.

P.T. was specifically made to look like a generic indie game, since the actual game wasn't gonna be like that.

Just wanted to throw that out there. I find P.T. to be a bit overrated, graphics (which I don't really care for) and sound design aside.
