What is the real condition of the NHS?

I often see headlines about how there aren't enough doctors, nurses aren't being paid enough, everything's being privatised and waiting times are far too long. But what is the truth?

I'm always able to see a doctor and as far as I know my local hospital isn't failing. When my dad had to call an ambulance after my mother collapsed, they arrived promptly and were very professional. So purely from my own experience there doesn't seem to be that much wrong with it. At least not here anyway.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Here is much more befitting of what you said there.

There definitely aren't enough doctors, sometimes it can take you a whole month to get an appointment unless it's an emergency.

The doctors themselves feel very limited too, like they're only allowed to do one thing for you and send you on your way.
They also have to keep you in for no more than 15 minutes, it's almost run like a business more than a service.

And the help they give you is often pretty s***, feeling any pain? Painkillers, that will fix it. Not just mask it and let the real problem go unresolved.

I've been waiting for any sort of a diagnosis for my potential asthma for probably I'd say 9 months now.
They've given me inhalers and made me make a diary of breath readings and scanned my heart. I'm going again tomorrow because I've had to try a nasal spray for a few weeks before going back.
Not only does it take forever to find out what's wrong with you it's disheartening to even go there feeling like they're not going to attempt to make you better.

Meanwhile my mother has enlisted the help of various private services, including one that does blood tests and they were much more accurate and efficient, they had her results the next day even and they found out she has Hashimoto's Disease, which is something the NHS doctors have said she doesn't have for years.
And this is across more than one area too it's not just one medical centre.

I don't blame the doctors, it's obvious there are some s*** a** rules in place about how much they're allowed to do for each person due to budget constraints.
Also the nearest proper hospital to here, Raigmore is in a pretty sorry state. Over the years there's been constant outbreaks of e-coli and many hundreds of people have got or even died from blood infections like septicaemia from the conditions in the hospital.
It's all been slowly crumbling.

Well the BMA says it's bad. Doctors and nurses in hospitals are being paid less (their unsocial hours have been cut), so more are leaving the country to places like Australia. There's plenty of research going back to the 1980s showing that performance by doctors significantly drops if they haven't been sleeping enough.

Personally, I've been on plenty of 3 month+ waiting lists (got an appointment tomorrow that I waited 8 months for). I don't know if the waiting lists for non-urgent or preventative care have gone up or not. A&E is always going to be prioritised, but public health could still be going down the drain if other departments are struggling. I really don't know anything though, apart from what I've heard from doctors and nurses, which is that it's a joke.

Honestly, talking about it is a waste of time. I'm just posting.

How can we really improve the situation tho? With the aging population things will get worse before they get better

I think we need more resources. Larger wards, more beds, more doctors and more ambulances. And ideally nurses should be paid more. That's not realistic but it could solve some issues. I don't know how the budget is spent but my gut tells me that the money goes to the wrong places.
