孫悟空

One of my least favorite characters

Same as the others, no hate just talk about the good stuff of Gohan. This one will be hard for me, but luckily Gohan does have a lot of cool moments.

First off Super Saiyan 2

One of the best and most iconic transformations in Dragon Ball. Not only is it a wicked awesome transformation, but everything he does was cool. His assault on the Cell Juniors and him stomping Cell was all great. I mean, Gohan even in the Cell Arc in general is pretty cool. He has some awesome outfits he wears as well.

But Gohan doesn't stop there, no next the Great Saiyaman saga.

I know a lot of people don't like this saga, but I think it's funny and great. Tbh, I actually liked Gohan in this saga and the high school drama was great. I also love Great Saiyaman.

Z-Sword Gohan, is pretty dope.

He's a got a cool sword and a cool outfit, too bad it breaks. But hey, he then goes Ultimate.

He needs an attitude check, but his stomp against Buu was great. But short lived. It's not as exciting as Cell, but it was good.

Oh ho I knew it was coming. I was kind of expecting Trunks first.

When I hadn't watched DB/Z properly yet, Vegeta was always my favourite character, because I always thought he was the strongest and his attitude was relatable. When I watched DB and DBZ for the first time, it was Goku (and sure as hell not Vegeta!), because Goku I felt was the best role model. Gohan was not far behind though and I nearly chose the username Kid Gohan. Over the years and while watching DB Kai (currently on the Freeza Saga), Gohan has become my favourite again.

For me his plight of being forced to fight, rather than studying as he would like, was always relatable, as was his anger and in the Cell Saga his desire to be peaceful, but not knowing how far to take it. Gohan represents excelling, even when having to do something you don't want to do. He represents being thrust into a world that isn't his, but still making it through and retaining enough of his self for him to eventually follow his dreams (of being a scholar).

Gohan gets a bit of hate for being immature or bratty, but in reality by the age of 11 he had had his world turned upside down multiple times. He was kidnapped by Raditz, heard his father being badly beaten, went through harsh training, had his mentor die for him before his eyes, had many adults try to kill him, found himself powerless to avenge his friends, saw children like Dende be murdered, saw Vegeta's tearful death, Krillin get impaled, Krillin get blown up while screaming for help and he literally saw people physically transform before his very eyes - how trustful and generally well-adjusted would any human be after even one tenth of that? What kind of view of the world would you have? It's no wonder that even a child as intelligent as Gohan would refuse to fight (which kid follows all instructions anyway?) and would have a sadistic side that led to him dragging out fights. The fact he's stayed compassionate and respectful, remained grounded in reality and achieved his dreams (even fitting in with normal city folk) and not gone down the bitter route of Vegeta or an early Tenshinhan is inspiring.

My favourite moments are probably when he rushed in to help the Namekians, when he went back to help Goku against Vegeta and really his general growth as he learnt to overcome his fear. As someone who knows the whole story, his moments when he makes out like Piccolo isn't all that bad are cute and it was great to see how an innocent kid can change the heart of someone who prized themselves on being callous and demonic. I personally liked his goofiness when he was a teenager in high school too, as it rounded out his character and made him even more relatable and thereby more endearing. I loved his seriousness in his Piccolo-esque seriousness in his Mystic form too. Honestly, I love his whole character and how it's been written - he really is a mix of Piccolo and Goku, maybe with a little Krillin thrown in the form of goofiness.

Gohan is one of the best characters in the show. His characterization is the most complex and argumented throughout the entire series. If we were to summarize a bit: he started off as a snotty, anxious crybaby, which is only understandable, judging by the fact that he was pampered and always kept in safety, protected from any exterior harms (still strange how he was let to wander through the woods in the first episode). His first character development was after Piccolo kidnapped him and he was forced to fight for the fate of the Earth, and also on Namek. He turned into a very brave and selfless young man, but the relatable thing is, it did not happen overnight. Let's not forget the moment when he cowarded out during the fight with Nappa. But, let's also recall the milestones he went through in his ripening: rage-blasting Nappa, telling Chichi to shut up when she forbad hin to leave, jumping in front of Frieza and his henchmen to save Dende.
Then, after a period of staying in the closet, he undergoes another character development. After being hesitant to fight against Cell, his Saiyan side took over and he began toying with Cell to the point where he was enjoying it. The same arrogance and brutality can be seen when he arrived to fight Buu. Now, to put a lid over everything, he realises his mistakes, unlike other characters.

Another thing I love about Gohan is his antithetic dual nature. On one hand, he is the pacifist and sensitive human being, constantly under his mother's skirt (bleh), on the other hand, he is a proud Saiyan with powerful battle instincts. There certainly was a lot of room for improvement and further development for this character and a lot of wasted material.

Let's also not forget that he is the strongest Saiyan, reaching realms at such a young age that Vegeta and Goku could only have dreamed of. And the great thing is, the process is explicable: he received severe training since 4 (left in the wilderness, constantly beaten up by beings stronger than him, trained at an unusual gravity and harsh environment etc.) and that, combined with his potential, made him a prodigy of the Saiyan race. Compare that to Goten and Trunks who sneezed and became SSJ. The whole 'find your inner rage to attain SSJ' legacy died with Gohan.

All in all, I believe he is a well built character and abominably underused later in the series.

I agree and honestly believe that he is the most characterized and best well developed character for sure.
