Alright so, I've been hearing about this show for a while now. Like... for the better part of a decade. Thinking about jumping in, so where do I start exactly? I hear that there are forever lost episodes, and some seasons are better than others? Is there a strict continuity that I should follow?

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

There is a continuity but it's fine to start with the series with Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor, that's when the series was rebooted and most of what happens now is set up from then.

There are old enemies and references to the older series but you don't need to watch them to understand what's going on.

The older stuff might be a bit dated to watch these days, I mean the show is still pretty cheesy at times now so imagine back in the 70's-80's

Purists would massively disagree of course but yeah, it should be fine to start there. The most important bits are explained there, how The Doctor works and all that. It doesn't just completely throw you in the ocean and drop a concrete block on your face.

Best to watch from Ecclestone the 9th Doctor onwards and then check out the classic episodes however you can afterwards. The episodes that are lost range between a number of the first Doctor's and most of the second's. All the episodes from the second Doctor's final serial onwards exist. In fact, a new blu ray set of the fourth Doctor's episodes is due out in June. I will be pre ordering without question.

If you don't like one Doctor's episodes just stick with it. You might just like the next one along instead. Each Doctor makes the show very different after all. I hated 11 so much that I seem to recall skipping some episodes of his.

So yeah give it a shot and I really hope you like it enough to one day watch the retro episodes.

The best Doctor Who stories are in the classic series, which ran from 1963 to 1989, but they are lost in a sea of cheap science fiction of dubious quality. I suppose the same could be said about the new series, which fluctuates wildly in quality, but there's far less of it to navigate through.

So I'd recommend just starting with the new one, which begun in 2005. It doesn't reach the same highs as the old series but it's definitely easier to get into. Certain moments will feel out of place and won't carry much weight without knowledge of the classic stuff but it's nothing that would really affect your experience.

Flashy Thing!

I just got into this show myself. I started with season 10 then 8 & 9. Now I'm watching season 6. There were a lot of references that I missed but overall, I was able to follow and didn't feel the need to go all the way back to season 3 or something. I did try looking at the earlier seasons but the Sci-fi technology was so poor that I couldn't watch it lol.
