I don't understand the issue here. Haven't read all of the posts. But was she doing something disrespectful or mocking? |

Depends on who you ask, some people have told her that "my culture is not your prom dress" basically accusing her of treating Chinese culture too lightly (consider for a minute that America for a long time had them in a semi-colonial status and the west in general subjected them to a century of humiliation regarding that). She has said that she respects Chinese Culture, some have agreed with that, others disagree. It's pretty mundane all things considered, the whirlwind comes from everything around it, which relates to stuff like colonization and the nature of the internet and how it divides. |

Part of the issue with the power argument is what happens when it’s intra-minority. For example, blacks have had a far more disadvantaged history in the US than Latinos. Does that make it okay for someone to pick up a sombrero and do a border coyote impression in really broken Spanish? After all, they’re punching up, aren’t they? People on Twitter overreacted to something innocent, that’s just Twitter mobbing for you. |

So if one person doesn't like you doing something you shouldn't do it, because they decided you're being an a*****? This is the guy you're talking about by the way https://nextshark.com/jeremy-lam-twitter-racism-prom-dress/ He appears to be Chinese or at least of Asian descent but he's clearly not some authority on Chinese culture, pretty sure he lives in the US and frankly there's a good chance he's never even been to China. Also this https://nextshark.com/qipao-girl-gains-support-from-chinese-netizens-after-sparking-debate-on-twitter/ But mostly:
Culture is very rarely something that you should never ever even dare to be a part of. Culture, throughout human history has pretty much always been shared unless specifically outlined otherwise. Pretty much any country or group you can go to will invite you to join in their festivities, no matter how unrelated your ethnicity is to theirs. Many make whole industries out of it, especially with food, which is a big part of culture too and is always something that gets shared. Even in some of the poorest places on the planet people will share their traditional meals with you. It's only a relatively small amount of people that have decided s*** like this is worth getting angry about, and they've since grown larger and larger through use of powerful words like "Racist" because how dare anyone disagree something is racist. It's nothing to do with colonialism and all that, you're looking way too deep in to it, it's not China vs America it's Offended people vs Everyone that disagrees with them. This girl, and most other cases of alleged appropriation aren't in any way racist or harmful. Wearing this dress hurt nobody and it looks fantastic. Unless someone is actually trying to be offensive, take credit for something that isn't their own or is doing something they know is a big no no, there is no real issue, just people in massive echo chambers that hate anyone who disagrees with them. And I always will because crap like this does nothing to better the world, culture is a beautiful thing to share with the world and it's why we're so diverse and interesting as a species. Dividing people more and more is just stupid and that's all these aggressively "progressive" people do. |

You know what's funny? This whole cultural appropiation / interpretation has been around for a while and in most cases, went unnoticed; take pop clips, for example (Rihanna appropiating Chinese culture in 'Princess of China', Shakira appropiating African in 'Waka waka', Inna appropiating Islamic in 'Yalla' etc. etc.). Yet a naive teenagers does this with no malicious intention and receives all this hate. |

I don't see a problem with this. We live in an age of attention whoring and faux outrage. People need to stahp. She quite clearly admires Chinese culture, if she's wearing that dress, and she has just as much claim to it as that random Chinese guy that got on her case about it. f*** him. |
