![]() "We are the true earthlings." The Subterraneans, also known as The Subterranean People (地底人, Chitējin) or The Underground People, are the self-proclaimed "True People of the Earth". They are ruled by the Subterranean King and live under the earth's crust, but grew too numerous in population and planned to take over the surface. They first appear in Saitama's dream(the only place where they do anything noteworthy, really), one where he finally encounters a worthy opponent, which doesn't necessarily mean that these guys were the strongest monsters in the series since Saitama was fairly weaker in his dream, only a bit stronger than when he was training, before breaking his limiter and becoming what he is now. They're still fairly strong, though. Feats They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. ![]() Even moreso in the webcomic. ![]() But regardless of their appearance, they're all able to easily tunnel and dig through the earth and concrete. ![]() Just shoving their heads through the ground is already a pretty decent feat. ![]() Possibly with just their bare hands, and in the webcomic they even possess pretty sharp claws. They lack these in the manga and anime, unless they're retractable. ![]() Speaking of their hands, they're pretty massive as you can see in any of the surrounding feats including this one. ![]() They're pretty effective diggers too, the one that first attacked Saitama followed him all the way to the street after punching him out of his house. ![]() As you can see Saitama didn't successfully block the second punch, being sent flying into a bridge's pier, and leaving a massive imprint on the concrete. ![]() Something to note is that in the anime, Saitama fends off the first attack by pushing/shrugging the Subterranean's arm off himself, but in the manga, the Subterranean takes a punch to the forearm. ![]() The first attack is also a bit more intense in the manga(though unlike the anime, the manga doesn't show Saitama getting punched through another room). ![]() Same goes for the second attack. ![]() Though despite of the Subterranean more or less tanking the punch to the arm, Saitama has just woke up, so he's likely not punching at full strength like we see later on, or here. Still, though some Subterraneans appear to take more than one punch or kick before dying or disappearing off-screen likely knocked out at the very least, so that's impressive, since serious Dream Saitama punches REALLY hard. ![]() And even though once Saitama gets serious he can easily obliterate them, they still manage to catch him off guard, in both the manga and the webcomic. ![]() They don't catch Saitama by surprise in the anime, but they do show off some incredible strength, speed, agility and skill along with some pretty good coordination. ![]() ![]() We see some of that coordination in the manga, when a bunch of Subterraneans send Saitama packing through a wall. ![]() Which of course, isn't that effective. They still cause a lot of destruction, though. ![]() Interestingly, a single Subterranean does this in the webcomic. ![]() Even more start attacking Saitama after he rises from the rubble. In the manga it's easier to tell if he's blocking attacks or throwing barrages of punches. ![]() Before the fight starts however, the Subterraneans estimate that they've killed around 70% of Earth's population, in the span of a night from Saitama's perspective no less. ![]() ![]() In the anime, we get to see some of the destruction they caused during their rampage. ![]() Speaking of anime-only stuff, the show offers a new variant of Subterranean (in a similar manner to the webcomic), one that is much bigger than the rest. ![]() A member of this bigger variant manages to punch Saitama before he punches him, sending him through a bridge and with enough force to apparently cause an explosion that obliterates everything in sight. ![]() Which happens twice, actually. Another large Subterranean surprises Saitama before he can punch him, though this one doesn't send him flying fast enough it seems. ![]() As you can see these guys pack immense strength to go with their physique and weight. ![]() Being able to vaporize large falling structures with their punches and whatnot. ![]() And not only that but it takes more than one punch to kill them. ![]() And in the anime, Dream Saitama's punches are even more brutal, turning regular Subterraneans into pools of blood. ![]() That's only at the start however, by the end of the anime fight, Saitama is pissed and strong enough to send several regular Subterraneans flying and likely killing them all with one blow. ![]() In the manga, when the Subterranean King emerges, it's like he erupts out of a volcano. ![]() ...Which leads me to another impressive feat, that these guys called the Earth's crust their home for God knows how long, and the planet's crust isn't exactly the best place to live in, at least for us humans, given the intense range in temperatures. ![]() Something that greatly differs from the anime compared to the manga and the webcomic is that in the last two the Subterranean King is shown to be pretty darn small next to how he looks in the anime. ![]() Another interesting difference beyond the lack of claws or the fact that in the manga the Subterraneans have three fingers whilst in the anime they have five is that in the webcomic the Subterranean King has six arms. ![]() RESPECT!
