It's a known fact that humans f***ed up when it comes to breeding dogs. Dogs are living with horrible deformities, there are breeds that can't breathe normally or their skulls are too small for their brains which means they live with chronic headaches. There are dog breeds out there that can't even mate or give birth without human intervention which means these dog breeds can't even exist in nature. Will we ever solve this problem? |

Has this been a recent phenomenon, as in the last century or so? I'm curious, because humans have been selectively breeding dogs for thousands of years for the purposes of domestication and services. But a lot of that breeding came from necessary intent, such as hunting, herding and passivity towards humans. More recently we've started creating breeds that are purely exist for cosmetic desire out of the pet, size being a particular issue here. Did these deformities and defects come from the creation of these designer pets, or has it been a problem for a long time? |

It's always been a problem. A lot of pure breeds develop heart and breathing problems. Plus their average life spans are generally shorter than a mongrel's. |

Now that you mention it, that makes sense. I've heard a lot about inbreeding being a huge problem with pure breeds. |

The simple solution I think is to just ban the breeding and sale of these dogs, pugs and chihuahua's shouldn't exist for instance. I forget the exact fact here but I'm pretty sure a chihuahua's skeleton can't even support it's body properly, they are way too small. Toy breeds like that either need to be bred with stronger breeds so that they get bigger and more stable or they just need to die out, it's unfair as f*** to birth them in to a life of suffering because poxy rich people want to own a fashion statement. Any breeding line with deformities should simply be stopped. My family got a Dachshund some years back, lovely little guy. One day he fell over chasing the cat and broke his back, wasn't even a big fall a regular tumble, not even a year old and he had to be put down because the vet discovered his back was basically in pieces already due to irresponsible breeding and he'd never walk or be pain free again. It's ridiculous how we do this, imagine you were forcing people who somehow almost always have cerebral palsy due to their genetic code to have kids that would certainly get it too because of some dumbass reason. (Health issue picked out of a hat, goes for anything serious obviously) It'd be unthinkable to do it with humans. |

Maybe even put a large restriction on the whole pet market? I've worked in a pet shop and I must say, in this industry, animals are treated not any better than perishable goods. |
