You never hear about escaped prisoners any more. Is it now impossible to escape from prison?

Someone escaped from a prison in my home state about 3 months ago. It happens a hand full of times each year. It typically requires a lot of planning and someone on the inside (e.g., corrections officer) to help out. Modern prisons are very difficult to escape though. At the police department hat I used to work at, we never had a prisoner escape. I believe that was because of our many security measures as well as the large number of people watching the very small number of people held in our cells. Prisoners more typically escape during transportation from one lock up to another or in transport to court.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I've definitely heard escaped prisoner stories in the news recently. Just googling it shows a few examples in this year alone. Might be rare, but it definitely happens.

A dude in South Carolina, (He was sentenced to life in prison for a 2002 kidnapping after holding a Columbia attorney and his family at gunpoint in their home.), was found two blocks from my apartment in the nearest Motel 6. Guns and at least 46k in cash. Last year.

The elaborate breakout plan involved cellphones smuggled in and a papier-mâché dummy in his bed to fool guards after he sneaked out,
"We believe a drone was used to fly in the tools that allow him to escape," Stirling said, adding that investigators were still investigating to confirm that a drone was used.
