Funimation vs Ocean Dub - Dragonball Z; How do you watch your Dragonball Z re-runs?

I love the Funimation version voices, music, and dialogue. However, I started Dragonball Z with the Ocean Dub. Sometime in the middle of the Ginyu Force/Frieza Saga the voices made a tranistion from Ocean to Funimation.

With that said, I prefer to watch DBZ with the same way whenever I watch re-runs; especially in order. I personally interpret it as that they were young and their voices started to change as they became older and more powerful.

I am actually watching episode 1 up until the change right now in Funimation for my first time. The dialogue is actually quite different and interesting. It's just so hard to watch it sometimes because I have the Ocean dub beginning episodes burned in my head lol.

I only watch the series in Japanese these days, well, ignoring the research I do for dub comparisons.

This is pretty hard for me to answer, seeing as I dislike both versions for most of the same reasons (inaccurate scripts, replacement score, etc.), but I guess it falls to the voice acting. I'm more used to the Texas cast than I am the Ocean cast, but the Texas cast took quite a while for their voice-acting skills to get to a level that I would consider "good". All in all, I guess I'd have to say that I prefer the in-house FUNimation dub just due to overall familiarity.

Of course, nowadays I watch Dragon Ball in Japanese almost exclusively, and if I did watch it in English, I would go for Kai instead of any of the older dubs, so take my response for what it's worth.

I love the Funimation dub of Kai. I can't really stomach their Z dub between not being a fan of Falcouner's music and the voice acting being pretty bad.

I started watching the Ocean dub, the original episodes that aired in syndication/Toonami before Funimation start dubbing in-house and I really like it. The music done by the legendary Shuki Levy is pretty good and the voice work is phenomenal. The censorship can get a bit irritating at times but it's a Saturday Morning Cartoon. If the Power Rangers can fight giant monsters in the conveniently empty warehouse district then buildings can be randomly abandoned in DBZ.

I have never watched the Ocean dub of the Android-The Buu saga which I heard is horrid

Compared to the Ocean Dub for the later episodes (which the poster PopcornShower very accurately describes as horrid), the Funimation version is superior, as I've grown to love Bruce Faulconer's music. However, the Ocean Dub that was distributed by Saban Entertainment for the first 53 episodes was AWESOME. I loved the music, Vegeta's raspy voice, and how the characters referred to death as "being in another dimension". I grew up on this dub and I wish they could have finished the entire series. They would always start over to the first episode after Goku beat Recoome.

I'm getting very angry with you, and for me that is a very bad thing, so watch yourself.

Eh I'm not really stingy with my tastes, I watch DBZ for the entertainment value, so for that I usually go with Funimation due to both the nostalgia factor of it, and the fact that iirc, Ocean Dub never finished the series, only reaching the Boo Arc.

I'm sorry but even at its best, the Ocean Dub was never anything to write home about. Funimation, even at its worst, always had a semblance of effort put into it. Even when the script was bad, they had a sense of joy with it, playing around and having a good time. If you aren't going to give a proper script then at least have fun with what you do have and Funimation was top on that. Say what you want about Faulconer's score but it was vastly superior over whatever Ocean Dub using later on.

And the biggest difference, Funimation got better. It got better with its acting, better with its script and this has continued on into Kai and Super. While some people might give early Ocean Dub a pass, even the most hardened Ocean Dub fans will find it difficult to give the same praise to later parts of DBZ,offering some of the most stilted voice acting of the series and a script still suffering from the same issues we'd seen in the past.

Even some character's which are questionable in the Funimation Dub end up being vastly superior. Linda Young is often criticized for her version of Freeza but dear god, Linda Young sounds like Ryusei Nakao compared to Pauline Newstone. Because again, even if their characterization is off, Funimation is still providing professional voice acting and inflection.

Asking me which English dub of DBZ I like more is like asking whether I prefer getting kicked in the balls or in the face.

Prior to Kai, the only well-dubbed things from either of them were the Ocean/Pioneer releases of the first three Z movies... so I guess just for that the "least awful overall" award goes to Ocean? Plus at least their VAs were more skilled and experienced even if the scripts were garbage the music and tone were mangled. But don't take me too readily at my word for any of that because my exposure to the Ocean dub is pretty much nil.

I thought they dubbed GT as well?

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

I'm sorry but have you seen the original broadcast of season 3? Not the rectified remastered version put on the dvds and streaming sites? Because the original Funimation in-house dub was terrible. TERRIBLE. The Ocean dub, for the first 53 episodes was vastly superior in every which way except maybe censorship. Less cringe dialog , far far more competent voice acting, a less annoying score. Funimation taking over was a definite step down and nothing about it resembled a semblance of effort. There was effort in the Ocean dub even if it had to be sanitized. There wasn't with Funimation until the Android saga.

I'm not defending all of Ocean's choice but implying that they didn't provide professional voice acting and inflection when Funimation did is all kinds of lol. The Ocean dub had an incredibly talented cast of actors. You not have thought they fit but they were good at their jobs. Shoot I still think Ian Corlett is the best Goku. Saffron Henderson was the best Gohan and Scott Mcneil was the best Piccolo.

Sort of. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT were dubbed by their cheaper sister studio Blue Water studios. It used a completely different voice talent.

Er, what? I'd argue there was an equal amount of effort put in as far as the series is concerned. When considering the movies, the uncut Ocean dub for the first 3 movies far surpasses anything from the original in-house Funimation dub. Seriously, nothing in the original in-house dub comes close to this

Brian Drummond's Vegeta was also great.

Can't comment on the dubs as a whole but I definitely like the Ocean Dub VAs better by virtue of being more experienced and just sounding a lot more charismatic and appealing.

Again I would argue there was far less effort in Funimation's original season 3 compared to the first two Ocean seasons. Anyone who thinks Funimation's dub was superior needs to watch some clips from the actual original in-house broadcast dub. Even the "remastered" version keeps some of the awful voice acting and horrid dialog. "ALLY TO GOOD NIGHTMARE TO YOU!" "That's one WHOPPER OF A LIZARD!"

Sorry but I can't stand Brian Drummond's Vegeta passed the Freeza Arc. The more youthful voice fits for the more youthful looking Vegeta of the Saiyan/Freeza but it seems so off compared to the much older looking Vegeta.

This is just one of the prime examples of how Drummond's Vegeta just doesn't fit across the later part of the show. The higher, more raspy voice simply doesn't fit. So many people like Drummond and it's not that he can't be good, early DBZ shows that but much like Linda Young, there's simply a time and place for his kind of voice acting. I think most people are just high on nostalgia

Ironically, Drummond's performance works better with Copy Vegeta due to the more youthful art style and Copy Vegeta looking well...different to say the least. It also helps that Drummon got to have a better script to work with in Super than he did in the past.

But sorry, maybe the first 3 movies were fine but the actual series really isn't anything to go home about and it certainly fell hard after the Freeza Arc.
