It's an unusual topic but I does it. Here's the fandoms I rep and don't: Goku Honestly... it's rare you'll find sane, rational views on Goku nowadays strangely enough for being the main character. His fanboys cling to his good qualities while refusing to acknowledge his flaws while others generally don't acknowledge these flaws without absolutely tearing him apart. He's also been the center of much controversy for the last few years due to his portrayal in Super making him appear much more selfish and battle-hungry than he was in Z. Some hardcore fans argue it's consistent with how he was in the manga/subbed versions but to me, it's just flanderization at its finest. Goku at his core character was always a simple-minded country bumpkin who wanted nothing more in life than to fight strong opponents but he knew when to get serious, had the heart of gold, was shown to be a fast-learner, and had a (deep) special affection for his family/friends. He now rarely if ever shows these traits in Super but it's only in the anime (which puts more emphasis in his stupidity) when it ever shows as opposed to the manga where he's basically a dumber Cell Saga Vegeta. One thing to note is FUNimation themselves downplayed his less admirable qualities to make him a more atypical superhero when they first dubbed Z probably because they believe the audience couldn't handle heroes who enjoy their job... maybe they were right. Fans have shown themselves as very easily offended though that could them being disillusioned by the dub. In the end, his fixation for fighting only showed when it was really obvious which didn't jell well with his dub character well. Gohan Being the son of our hero and having more potential as a fighter than any other recurring character, Gohan is naturally one of the most popular characters in Dragon Ball but not too many fans seem to like him for who he really is- a mild-mannered, peace-loving rice boy with a strong sense of justice. Of course now they have good reason to complain but the issue is that they're simply not making it. Instead of asking modern Dragon Ball to show basic respect for the character and his fans, they just want him to be top dog. Vegeta He is one of my, if not most, favorite characters alongside Krillin and now I think very few would be against this position. His character is unarguably the most dynamic in the entire series as he went from an uncaring and ruthless space pirate (even by Saiyan standards) to a proud man who has learned humility and accepted he has people to care for. My only issue is that his characterization in Super all over the place- in the manga, he's too passive while in the anime, he's regressed back to his Pre-Boo Saga self (refuses to show affection for his family and Goku-obsessed). Also, I will never be sold Vegeta x Bulma as this glamorous love story no matter how much modern Dragon Ball tries to make people believe. I only like the relationship for the individual characters and what they gained from it. Bulma The most significant female character no doubt, but that doesn't necessarily mean she's the most likable ("Oh, she occasionally moves the plot forward! Worship her!!") so there's no need to rep her fans- if anything, modern Dragon Ball I'd argue gives her more attention than deserved. I also don't like how the series shows she can use and abuse lesser characters because of her position, someone of which the original Dragon Ball punished her for, and just throw money at people's problems but seeing how Vegeta treats her in Super I can't be annoyed with it. Another thing is some fans tend to take their love for the character too far by stepping on other characters to make her look better, especially Yamcha and Chi-Chi the resident target practices for character bashing. Lastly, R.I.P Hiromi Tsuru. Yamcha Let's be fair, Yamcha fans- he's always been a punchline among the community for being a jobber but the franchise always treated him with a level of respect. However, TFS had set that sucker (his meme status) in stone particularly for western fans and it also doesn't help Toriyama just doesn't seem to care at all about him, but at least the franchise does. Chi-Chi I could use this as another platform to rant about how her haters are big meanies who demonize her over the dumbest things, but I won't. I've ultimately accepted there's really no solution to the matter so the only thing that can be done is hope for the best, but until then don't expect me to get along with the haters or anyone who's all sympathetic with them. My only regret is I didn't speak out on them sooner. The haters have been a problem for quite some time and I had a premonition that things would take a turn for the worst since that abomination of a side-"story" (Dragon Ball: Minus) first came out. Why didn't I respond before the situation got out of control- was it fear of being judged for liking a character so many people seem to have problems with or was I too nice? What other characters' fandom are you interested in talking about? Post it for yourself. |

Wish you had done on Broly as well. Dude's an enigma, by far most polarizing figure of the DB lore Gotta add few things on Goku. As much as good-hearted Goku is, dude's always been subjected to criticism of being selfish when it comes to fighting People tend to forget. Its called goal. If pursuing a goal is considered selfish, then its safe to assume humanity is at its end times. Goku is a natural fighter. Its his Saiyan instincts propels him to fight stronger beings. Its his genetics. DNA. Not his fault Still, dude manages to find a balance in keeping humanity & world in safe hands like in Cell & Boo Arc. Those are my thoughts on Goku's criticism often subjected by detractors |

People can like or dislike a character without being labelled. However, if I were to mention some tropes that I have noticed among Dragon Ball fans: Goku: some people kept Goku on a pedestal as their Japanese prodigy hero that defined their childhood and they would simply refuse to grow out of their melancholic sack and accept him for whom he has become. They probably associate this with a violation of their childhood or something. Vegeta: rarely have I heard a person saying that they like Vegeta for the lovable family guy he has become. Many people fanship Vegeta for the broken record that he constantly plays about his pride. 'Cuz that makes him look badass. And badass is cool. It's as simple as that. And I can't help to notice that OP is a Chichi fan. However, they have to learn that a person having a critical opinion and a hater are not always the same thing. |
