I want your thoughts on this. Do we need a black history month? And for those of you who are black, do you think we need one?

Given the current climate in the United States, yes. It is still needed.

No, it's not needed, but only because it should just be taught in the curriculum like any other history (if it's not already).

I'm not a fan of having any sort of "history month" regardless of race. I would prefer if we just celebrated human accomplishments regardless of what month it is and which race said person in question belonged to.

Black history month is only a thing in USA because of slavery. Everywhere else in the world it's a normal month.

It's a thing in USA and Canada in february and, surprising to me, in UK and Netherlands in october.

No, we definitely do not. It makes little sense to make a month dedicated to blacks and their history, but at the same time neglect every other race. A question often brought up is why dont we have a white history month too? The simple answer is because we dont need one. The exact same is true for black history month. Black history month was made by a bunch of s***faced idiots, who thought this would do anything but stir drama, in a already racially sensitive country.

Well, the Netherlands does have ''Black Achievement Month''.

If you're going to get rid of Black History Month, then what's included in that needs to be incorporated into the general teaching curriculum. As has been said previously in the topic, more specifically in the United States, the current situation requires for there to be a focus on the history of ethnic minorities. If you want there to be a bigger focus on other ethnic minorities, I'm with you, but you can do that without tearing this down.

I've never heard of it anyway. If we do have it the media pays 0 attention to it.

Until "black history" is taught properly in government schools, it is needed. At least, if we want kids and adults to have a more complete picture of the history of different cultures and the roles that different groups have played in society. With better knowledge, prejudices can be more easily reduced and people of all ethnic backgrounds can more easily have a sense of cultural identity and pride, which is important for fostering their overall confidence so that they can make the most of their potential. It's not an issue of principal, but a pragmatic one.
