Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

What makes killing animals not normal?

How many other animals do you see raping others to get milk from them? Can't say I've ever heard of that. Rape for sick satisfaction for sure, like otters with baby seals but not for nutrition.
I can point you to examples of other animals having pets or perhaps slaves but usually it's something mutually beneficial, like that type of spider that keeps a pet frog.
The frog eats any insects that would come and try eat the spiders eggs and the spider...well it doesn't kill the frog for starters and it otherwise protects it.

Also, because I'm immoral and don't really care enough about what the industry does to animals to want to make a change.

That's unfortunate.

If someone were punching you in the face and you asked them to stop, but they replied, "Sorry man, I just don't care," and they kept punching you, is that a response you would accept?
No, it's not a response I'd take, but that's something that personally affects me. I really only care about myself and my friends and family, at least enough that I'd actively try and change things for them.

You wouldn't say the same for humans dying, regardless of how unimportant, worthless, or valueless you may see them because "they're human tho."

Yup. It upsets me more to hear about humans being treated badly than it does animals. That being said, I still don't care enough to do much about it other than give money to the odd charity or help out if I see somebody in need. If I don't care enough about humans to make sure I'm not buying products linked to ill treatment of them, then I'm definitely not going to do the same for animals.

Why do you choose to donate money to causes, but don't take the effort to change your diet?

I understand that in certain instances there isn't much that can be done outside of donating your money or time, but vegetarianism is fairly practicable. I understand that awful things go on in clothing industries, and I do my best not to purchase products that I know were the result of unfair labor, but I'm not perfect. None of us are. The best that we can really do, if we care about this planet, its inhabitants, and the environment, is to abstain as much as is possible and practicable from practices that kill, harm, or threaten our planet and its inhabitants.

If you say you care about people, animals, the planet, or future generations, you should be practicing what you preach and understanding how your footprint impacts all of those things. If you truly don't care about any of that and want to go through life as quickly and easily as possible, then I suppose this doesn't apply to you. It's okay to admit that you don't care about anything. I'm interested in understanding why.

Because it tastes good and that is literally the reason. Meats, much like chocolates or other sweets, creates a signal inside the brain that causes cravings. Meats are thought to have this certain effect on the human brain because in the past, it was hard to get meat. Our ancestors weren't dining on Mammoth Steaks leisurely. They ate vegetation, berries, nuts, etc. Therefore our biology and minds have become accustomed too easily to things like fruits and vegetables that it doesn't give, what could be described as a sort of "high", to us.

As long as meats continue to give that natural high to us, people will continue to eat it.

So until that high goes away or eating meat causes people's heads to explode Scanners style, they will continue to eat it.

That sounds like justification, not logical reasoning. How do you balance this mode of reasoning against the evidence in the OP and the unethical nature of consuming animal products?

I donate when I can to different charities, human-based and animal-based alike too. That's the thing, it isn't logical. I fully admit that I'm not being logical, and that I'm probably a massive piece of ****. Cognitive Dissonance is a weird thing, and it's especially strong when it comes to matters like this.

I felt the same way too for a long time. All of the arguments in favor of veganism made perfect sense to me, to the point where I eventually began to feel guilty about eating meat everyday. I think one day I just couldn't handle it anymore. I don't like being illogical, and I certainly don't like being a hypocrite.

It's an addiction, man. I feel your pain.

Eating something because it stimulates certain pheromones in the brain isn't logical? That's like telling a smoker the only reason they haven't quit is because they haven't tried hard enough. We eat meat, because it literally stimulates certain things in the brain that makes us crave it. While that same thing often doesn't occur with fruits and Vegetables.

And frankly, I don't give two cents what happens to a bunch of animals as long as I get my gratification of meat. There's a reason we don't hold animals on the same level as humanity. I'm all up for more humane ways of dealing with our livestock but I'm not going to give up my joys of eating meat so that the cows can be treated better.

That's a bad comparison, because smoking is also illogical.

I fully understand that there's an addiction factor, don't get me wrong, but that doesn't make addictions "logical."

And you know this how? I haven't craved meat since the first couple of weeks I gave it up, yet I often find myself craving fruit or lentils. This doesn't seem like an argument based on evidence.

And I'm sure people in another country don't give two s***s about your family, but that doesn't mean your family deserves to die, does it?

And what would that be?

Why are you all up for more humane ways of dealing with livestock when you apparently "don't give two cents what happens to a bunch of animals?" There's a disconnect happening here, and I think that examining the root of it will lead us to some answers. You clearly feel empathy toward animals or you wouldn't care whether they're treated humanely or not. Why do you feel empathy toward them?

Same reason supplied in this thread, meat tastes good. Also, the bane of my existence is vegetables, there's very few of any vegetables which I actually enjoy eating.

Have you ever considered being a vegetarian who eats very few vegetables?

It's just a big misconception that all vegetarians eat tons of vegetables. I certainly don't.

Let's put it this way, better treatment of animals leads to better physical and mental states. Better physical and mental states leads to better quality of food. In the end, treating animals humanely gives better results and makes the meal more delicious. Same way that treating people humanely gives you better results at the workplace. We know that healthier qualities of life given to livestock, poultry, etc will ultimately make for better quality of meats later.

I don't care about the well being of the animals, I care about the well being of the food. I don't care that certain animals are forced to live in hellish environments because I don't view them on the same level as I do other things. However, if better treatment leads to better quality, than I'm all up for it. Essentially, the healthier the animal is the healthier the product will be.

Let me ask you this. Do you protect every insect you come across? Do you go about and try to protect every fly that comes into your home? Do you hold up a sign for people not to step on an ant? We hold different views of morality for different things and the meat we eat is no different.

It's definitely possible, but still, I wouldn't do it. Because I enjoy eating meat, and at this point it's a habit I have no real motivation to break.

I highly doubt that treating animals humanely "makes the meal more delicious."

No, it's actually not the same. High morale garners better performance, but how does treating animals humanely make their meat taste better? That doesn't even make sense.

Again... how?

That's incredibly selfish. What "other things" do you view on a higher level, and why? You're not really answering any important questions. You're just repeating yourself. How does the animal's health impact the health of the product? Does a healthy cow suddenly make burgers healthy? This isn't a logical way of thinking.

You haven't answered any of my questions, so I'm inclined not to answer yours, but I'll ignore that inclination for the sake of discussion.

I do not go on crusades protecting insects. Then again, I don't go on crusades protecting animals either. I simply abstain from eating them. I wouldn't go around purposefully stomping on insects because that's unnecessary.

Is eating meat necessary? If it isn't necessary, it's unethical. Plain and simple. We are a gluttonous, selfish species, and I pity us.

That we constantly rape cows and keep them pregnant is kinda f***ed up, killing animals is normal but raping something and forcing it to be pregnant until it dies is very much not.

? What makes killing animals "normal" and raping cows "not?"
Because there is a massive moral difference in killing an animal for a use, in this case to provide food for other people. It's not the same as killing an animal just for fun, which immediately makes anyone who does it an ass-hole who purposely goes around killing living solely for their own purposely enjoyment. Continuously raping an animal is far worse than that.
