UI has been presented to us as a technique but the weird thing about it is, that for all intents and purposes, it just acts like a form. Goku gets a shiny new aura and a shiny new look and he's seemingly much more powerful than before. But UI has already been in the series and caused no physical change, Whis and presumably all of the angels use UI as just they way they fight. He doesn't get a new look whether he's sitting down for tea or schooling Goku and Vegeta on how to fight. He certainly doesn't get this unexplained 'heat' or a second voice like Goku has done. Beerus in the manga also shows signs that he's the best fighter out of the gods because of UI, which Whis says he hasn't mastered but he's clearly close and Beerus doesn't change in form or suddenly seem vastly stronger than all gods, he just dodges them better. Jiren can fight somebody using UI seemingly without breaking a sweat, so is he using it too? Did Vegeta use it to attack Jiren but got no new aura or anything in episode 122? Vegeta also stated he dodged Ribrienne earlier without thinking and his body moved on its own. Maybe we're supposed to believe it is a technique which Goku is using right now which is giving him a new aura and new power but were actually being mislead intentionally. Ultra Instinct being a fighting technique might be all that is ever was and characters are using it with no change to their power and it's a massive improvement to their fighting but something else may be happening to Goku which naturally causes his body to use UI without him having control because he's not in control and that's why it seems like UI but it's actually another force possessing Goku's body from the void or something else entirely happening. Of course I'm probably wrong and Super is just taking the idea of fighting technique and literally converting that into a power boost to advance the plot, calling it a 'technique' so as not to be accused of spamming new forms too much, even though UI at this point for Goku, is behaving exactly like a new form with added dodging. |

I look at it as something the sayains can only do. I think because it is taping into there natural instincts and sayains have the ozzaru which is a form based on instinct so i think because of that and what writers have said about it that he is on the verge of a mew form that he has only partially figured out yet. We where told a few times goku is getting a new transformation then we are told UI is a technique not a transformation. well writers where is this new form? We were also told to watch gokus eyes as they would be constantly changing and i have yet to see that happen. So either they have been untruthful with us or they have not shown anything yet in regards to what they where talking about. Another interesting thing is the art work before UI debut being different then what was shown in its debut episode from aura to even the eyes if i remember correctly. Hell even the UI that has shown its self so far is far from jiren full power and we know it is getting stronger the more its around. So i dont think the UI we see now will be what will defeat jiren. |

I think it's more like a state, rather than technique or form. More advanced UI users like Whis don't undergo a physical transformation so that bars transformations, and it seems to be natural for him to dodge attacks without thinking so it being a technique is unlikely. Goku would need to think and focus to use the Kaioken for example. |

It's a technique and a transformation. He bursts out of his shell, reaching his deeper potential. Transforming is his way of achieving the ultra instinct technique. |

Ultra Instinct is presented like a transformation because Toei thinks the audience is stupid. The way Whis introduces the concept is really simple: the ideal way of fighting is trough pure instinct--Goku and Vegeta both think too much before every action and that hinders their efficiency in combat. But, when it was finally time to show Goku fighting instinctively, they decided it had to be like a transformation, with his hair becoming spikier and his eyes changing for no reason. Because Toei thinks that, otherwise, people would be left scratching their thick neanderthal craniums wondering how Goku managed to fight better if there was no transformation. I can't think of a single decent in-Universe explanation. Edited by Topographic Oceans, Jan 9 2018, 05:57 PM.

But if it is a technique, Goku can't suddenly lose or forget the technique while in base or any SSJ/B forms. Apparently he needs to be beyond SSJB, requiring and exhibiting more power than even SSJB kkx20 when he's in UI state. He looked as if in base because of black hair, but by no means he was in base. And when he blasted Kamehameha at Kefla, it's at least SSJB power, so he can't be logically in base form. |

I don't think Vegeta has unlocked it yet, because they would never make it as subtle as avoiding the odd attack or seeing through someone's technique. However, I do support the idea that Jiren has used it since the beginning. It's entirely possible he has mastered it way better than Goku who has just began using it; Better on balance, stamina and also how to use it without an aura (so far). Not sure if Jiren was ever surprised to see the form used by Goku. Of course, also pretty sure all the angels know how to use it to varying degrees. I don't think all of them have mastered it, like Whis. Whis is way too excited to know how to masterfully use it. |

Similar to what others have mentioned, a good reason for why the theory of autonomous movement was converted into a form was marketing. Toei seeks to monetise the advent of a new concept and to do so they need a stunning visual effigy which consumers are able to recognise. In-universe the justification for this new visage entails Goku shattering the ceiling of his limited potential and reaching the chasmic depths of strength beyond it. The Spirit Bomb was purported to function as an energy source for Goku during the initial limit breaking phenomenon. Somehow Goku has been able to tap into that situational transformation while retaining the looks from his Spirit Bomb induced unlock. Here I guess you could look towards Goku's body "remembering" the power generated by Super Saiyan red and turning it into his own organic power as a foundational precedence - even though that opens up a can of worms on its own as many have discredited that incident in light of recent material and character feats. Should Vegeta unlock Ultra Instinct Omen then we'll know that the Spirit Bomb wasn't intrinsically necessary to obtaining that look. I think he may choose to acquire it in his own way, though. A recent promotional image shows him with the trademark blue hair of SSJB but eyes with characteristics similar to Ultra Instinct. Perhaps Vegeta somehow taps into the greater depths of his potential while using SSJB as an energy source. |

Goku has smashed the ceiling of his potential before though, many times and the whole absorption of ssjg power into base is weird to me anyway. Why didn't he do that with oozaru? Or ssj? Or ssj2? Or ssj3? His bod remembering the power of a new form upon reverting back down to base, I don't see why ssjg is any different other than it "just is". |

I take it as the feeling of godly ki. While he may have normal ki afterwards his it was amped to gods power level. The reason ssj dose not do that is because it is still normal ki. As well as his ssj god form is basically just his base with godly power while blue is just ssj with godly power. |

It may have had something to do with the typology of the ki in the case of SSJG. To Goku's body it was a completely alien form of power which his body couldn't organically project on its own. Being an assimilative fighter sponge with genetics that compel him to relish and thrive in battle, I guess his body may have retained the building blocks of god ki so as to be able to harness it on his own. Ultra Instinct could have been similarly replicated as it's an integrated cognitive state of mind and power application which was unheard of to Goku. Sure, he's reached ceilings before but it usually had to do with generalised quantity of ki and nothing with the fundamentals of its type or a psycho-somatic state of being which completely alters a living being's way of functioning. |

It's not logical/normal that ones form changes drastically if one uses UI. But ain't that the same with the other forms Saiyans use? Anger, perfect Ki-control: is it 'normal' that ones hair color changes when implying these states? Would it be as entertaining, even for adult fans, if all the Saiyans were just fighting in their baseforms all the time? I think a lot of people would have considered UI Goku rather disappointing when it appeared to be just a basestate with weird looking eyes, but without the visually impressive aura. 'Those lazy animators of Super ass-pulled us again ...' I just headcanon it like: 'it's typical something for Saiyans to shapeshift along with their state of mind'. |

I mean people complained about god being base with red hair, eyes, and a firey aura comparing it to kaioken which was just stupid of people. Then ssgss saying its just a color swap with a new aura. And we cant forget about golden freiza which nearly his whole body changing calling it a color swap with a fancy aura. People just expect something over the top like ssj4 was. I honestly like the more simple designs. But again these same people who hated those love UI and its simple design and fancy aura lol. |
