Most anime air early in the morning for KIDS. In both USA and Japan. And the family Guy thing is different as that an Adult cartoon. Alot of popular anime are for kids.
That has not been my experience. Sure, there are animes for kids, but there also animes for grown-ups. Dragon Ball Z, Full Metal Jacket, Cowboy Bebop for instance.
sho·nen
ˈSHōnən/Submit
noun
noun: shounen
a genre of Japanese comics and animated films aimed primarily at a young male audience, typically characterized by action-filled plots.

DBZ and Super Aired at 9am on Saturday mornings. It's for kids lol
young male audience doesn't mean kids.
Airing at 9am with all the merchandise being aimed towards kids with arcade machcines aimed towards kids kinda implies.. it's for kids.

My Dear Melancholy,

If you wanna be even technical. The original was for Y7 while the new one is PG. Does that mean anyone over the age of 7 can't judge the original?

Also DB and DB super and DBZ are definitely for kids.

Considering the time-slot (Sunday morning at 9:00), toned-down violence, and demographic of the original series, I'd say that their main target audience would be kids aged 5-12. Secondary audience would be their parents, the kinds of people who grew up with Dragon Ball, and the ones with the income to buy their merchandise.

I guess it is also fair to note, from what I can gather, is that fans in Japan aren't quite as picky as Western audiences when it comes to things like continuity. Things like power-levels, ret-cons, plot holes or what have you aren't as much of a thorn in their side so long as the story and visuals capture their attention.

Well, I don't know if Dragon Ball Super is targeted at a new demographic or not. But considering the original Dragon Ball comics finished in 1995, the Dragon Ball Z television series ended in 1996, and the follow up Dragon Ball GT ended a year later in 1997, with so much time having past it was almost a sure thing that a continuation to the franchise in 2015 that picks up where Dragon Ball Z left off in 1995/1996 would be at least somewhat different and have various changes to tradition. With twenty years having passed, it's inevitable that changes would be made. Manga and anime fans of the present probably have somewhat different tastes to the ones of the mid 80s to mid 90s who read and/or watched the original series, so Dragon Ball Super has to be something both appealing to the fans who nostalgically miss the show while at the same time being able to have new fans be able to jump on board.

Forget demographics and merch. Looking at the manga/anime, there are plenty of brutal fights and blood. I'm thinking especially of the fight between Goku (and friends) and Vegeta, and Spopovitch vs Videl.

It is geared more toward kids though, and you have to consider cultural differences.

So we're ignoring what the author and the company that produces it choices to target because you feel a fight scene neglects that.

If that's the case then every Y7 tv show ain't for kids with all the sex jokes, hidden sex scenes, and adult humor it has.

Dexter Lab had a scene where it's a club for Big Dicks. Or when someone with a fat a** had the words daddy treasure on it.

And there's this

Let's be real, fight scenes and blood are more serious than sex jokes kids likely won't get.

Ok just a quick question. What the difference between kid shows and shows that kids can watch that also appeal to adults?

Kids shows (in USA) have a Y7 rating. Shows that are for kids but can be enjoyed by adults are typically PG but typically are also YOU.

Comedic relief / Serious tones.

There's a difference.

Obviously they dumb it down for kids, american TV usually cuts out blood from animes in fact.

My Dear Melancholy,

Gi Joe wasn't for comic relief someone was getting stabbed.
Batman was blood from battles.
Power Puff girls professor got cut from glass.
Northwest had a pool of blood from a gun

Are you watching these shows before the comments you're making?

Besides language Naruto, later portions of DBZ, GT, Prince of Tennis, and many other anime didn't cut the blood out. Maybe in the mid 90s and 2010s. But for most part they was left alone. That's cartoon Network alone. If you change the channel some was completely uncensored.

I would argue GI Joe and Batman weren't made for kids but for adolescents (age 12-17).

There's too many layers here regardless, there's really no point in keeping this discussion going.

Batman TAS aired on FOX KIDS and then KIDS WB.

GI JOE was made to sell action figures to little boys..

Also re black powerpuff girl, she doesn't even look black just white a tan but this reboot is made by obvious pedophiles so who cares.
