Why living in the middle ages sucked

They didn't know how to treat illness

It was cold

The food was terrible if you could even get hold of anything

It was smelly

Dentists were terrifying

You weren't allowed to eat meat on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays

It took days to travel anywhere

You had to pay tolls just to enter towns and cities or cross bridges

Able bodied men were drafted into the army during war times

It was the law for women to get married and then they became their husband's property

The music sucked

Women couldn't go out by themselves

Giving birth could easily kill a woman or her baby or both

I think it's the smell and the widespread famines that would drive me up the wall.

Bad years for wheat are 1315-17, 1321-23, 1331-32-1350-52, 1363-64, 1367-68, 1369-71 and 1390-91. And those are just the wheat famines.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Some of this still does apply to places in the world today. But yeah, I do feel lucky to have been born in a developed country during this time in human history. It does feel like life has improved so much over the last 60-70 years compared to how much it improved in hundreds of years previously.

"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."

No, it did not!

Also, let's not forget about The Bubonic Plague. Or those dark ages where all sorts of weird terrorist religions would dominate. Take Calvinism, for example. I'll translate a passage from my Criminology handbook: 'Whoever dared to criticize Calvin or his doctrine, would've been whipped to the quick, had their tongues pierced with a hot nail, exiled or even executed. There were prison sentences even for the pettiest things: for falling asleep during a sermon, for playing bowling, for singing or dancing, for having pie for breakfast etc.'. Yes, it sucked.
