Quoting some user's from another forum opinion on this:
This thought just scares the s*** outta me... thinking we will just disappear like a fart in the wind after dying and, much like before being born, won't sense anything is just a terrifying way to look at it... I better think there's an afterlife and we just won't turn into "nothingness" after death lol. Life just seems so meaningless if we will just disappear after being dead... It is a scary thought. This life and world is such a sad story if this is the case "We're here because of luck" is what a lot of people say but I find that hard to believe because of what the chances of us and this insanely complex universe existing out of pure luck is |

If that guy is right, you sitting there and saying, "I better think there's an afterlife," is really pointless. If he's wrong and you end up in an afterlife, you currently saying, "I better think there's an afterlife," is still really really pointless. |

It's pointless, but might comfort me more. Even though yeah, it's the way it is whether we spend time thinking about this or not. The funny thing is that if it happens to be just nothingness after death, then we won't know the truth ever -- which is also really unpleasant. |

I really don't get people who say: "Oh I believe this because it comforts me." So what? That doesn't mean you truly believe it. If I believed that I was one day going to win the lottery and never had to work a day in my life, that would comfort me too. Doesn't mean I actually believe that's going to happen. I believe what I believe and whether or not that comforting or scary is completely irrelevant. |

Probably is just nothingness. Not that you'd notice. This is why it's a good idea to try and make a difference in the world. Then your life won't be for nothing. Help the human race to continue its evolution. You can be an important part of a greater purpose. So what if you die and there's no afterlife? At least you've helped your species in some way. Heaven makes life meaningless as well. You devote your life to God and try your best to be a good person, then you get chosen to enter heaven. But it's meaningless because what is the point in having a life in the first place? Why not just be born into heaven? Why the trials and tribulations of life and the chance of going down the wrong path and ending up in hell? So to me having no afterlife is less meaningless than having one. |

I believe that when you die you just die. No bells and whistles, just the same nothingness that was there before you came into existence. I don't think that makes life pointless though. You still have to live that life, so the purpose is to make it a life worth living in your own eyes. |

"Then you've got the chance to do better next time." "Next time?" "Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is." | |

There is no such thing as how much someone does believe or not.they either beliebe or don't .so everyone who believes in an afterlife do truly believe it. |

Saying "I believe this because it comforts me" isn't real belief or faith, yeah. Someone who really believes in something like that isn't going to say that. But yeah, I don't get why some people say that either. |

Do you mean why not feeling anything, not being anything, that nothingness is scary and unpleasant? Just the thought of it shudders me. I obviously can't give you a detailed explanation of why this is scary, unpleasant... you either feel that or not. Edited by ahill1, Dec 26 2017, 01:50 AM.

there is no such thing a nothing. you didn't exist before you were born so then what dictated you being born? you came out of that nothingness into something therefore it only stands to reason that if you return to that same nothingness eventually you will come back to something. everything breathes. we inhale and we exhale and then we inhale again. everything moves in cycles. in a circular fashion more so than a linear one. to me it an absurd thought that after you die you just cease to exist. the sun rises and it sets and it rises again. the simple fact that it sets is what enables it to rise. life is the same way, we live because we die and we die because we live, we can not have one with out the other therefore the fact that we live implies that we will die and the fact that we die implies that we will live again. like i said, for all intents and purposes we were dead before we were alive. if you die and that it then that means that there is something that is keeping track of who's lived and died. if you die and you continue to live then that just the natural cycle of the soul. if i was dead before i was born, then why am i alive? its because there is life after death. and that's coming from someone who does not believe in the bible. |

Even if one were to assume that we could 'live' again, we wouldn't have our memories, our personalities or anything that made us who we are. At that point, could you even consider that you? As for nothingness, it's a difficult concept to grasp because it's the very opposite of everything we are and everything we know. That doesn't mean that it isn't a 'thing', though. We didn't exist before we were conceived/born and we won't exist after we die, there's no evidence of any kind of cycle at all. |
