The zodiac killer, Donald Gaskins, Ted Bundy, Charles Cullen, Patrick Kearney, Dennis Raider, Paul Knowles, William Bonin, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy
and Tommy Lynn Sells.

This is just a sample of American serial killers who operated between 1969 and 1990. In a span of just thirty years there were more than 11 serial killers running around the United States. Most of them during the 70s. What was it about this period that drove so many men to kill?

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Doesn't America have a disproportionate amount of serial killers when compared to the rest of the world? Must be something about the country or the way of life that brings it out of people more than it does anywhere else.

Something in the water maybe? I mean a lot of native tribes were very violent, then we had the completely unnecessary war of independence, then they killed a load of natives during the westward expansion, then there was a civil war and all the gang violence during prohibition. So yeah, maybe there's just something about the country that makes people extra blood thirsty?

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I guess maybe it's just easier? The US police force isn't exactly the greatest and it's easy to arm yourself against them.

I wouldn't think of being a serial killer here because virtually every officer could knock me the f*** out and getting a hold of any guns to fight them off would be a hassle, whereas a lot of the time American cops are overweight and unfit.

A lot less scary I'd imagine, you could be more confident you'd get away with it.

And these days of course there's just more security in general with CCTV cameras and whatnot.

Alternatively maybe there's more than ever and they're just so much better at it now...

So far the most plausible theory I have is they came about roughly the same time as highways. So whereas one time these nut jobs wouldn't leave their home towns, now travelling was much more convenient.
