Are empires more viable these days?

In the olden days, if you had an empire then it would take days or even weeks for messages to get relayed. Plus trade would be very slow and you would have to rely really heavily on local governors to maintain stability and growth. Keeping the peace on the edges of your empire's borders was nearly impossible. It just wasn't practical to run a an empire when you had no means of instant communication.

These days we have all kinds of ways to keep track of what's happening around the world. A governor only has to step in dog s*** and we all know about it. Plus our trade networks are way better so we can manage economies better. We can keep everyone in the empire fed and educated.

So my question is, would an empire work today?
