Some questions about broadband speeds

We're looking into changing broadband providers and I was wondering if anybody could help with questions regarding speed. Basically, with our current provider the advertised 'up to' speed is 100mb, but we get around 30-40mb through various speed checks. That's fine. The question is, if we change to a cheaper package with a different provider that has an 'up to' speed of 52mb, would that have any impact on our 30-40mb speed?

What I'm wondering is are the 'up to' speeds moot if the speed you're getting is under them anyway i.e. we're getting 30-40mb, so it doesn't matter if we get a 100mb package or a 52mb one, we'll still get that 30-40. Or is it like a percentage? So if you're getting 30-40 on a 100 speed connection, you'll get 15-20 on a 52mb one (because the 'up to' speed is 50% lower).

If it helps, the provider we're considering changing to advertises that they run in this area about 100 yards from our house, but I have no frame of reference so don't know if that's close or not.

The "Up to" depends on the type of cables used, how far you are from the telephone exchange and sometimes even what type of day it is. Also be aware that some companies are known to throttle your connection at certain times of the day or if you use x amount of bandwidth. So read up if your provider is known for doing that.

A word of wisdom from a recent event that happened to me. My wifi router when it updated to protect against the latest WPS2 hack, enabled QoS without me knowing about it. Suddenly my down speed was half what I was getting before. It had by default set all of my devices to normal priority and halved all of their speeds.
Do check this to ensure you're on the highest priority of your QoS, or disable it. It could help you if you're not aware like I was.

Also sometimes, an UP TO speed isn't always true in a good way. For instance I have 50mbps down package, but I usually get about 70. It could go the opposite way also.

Mitas, you're from England right? I'm assuming you're looking at BT's Fibre Infinity 1 package if the advertised speed is up to 52mb. Fibre generally provides much more stable speeds than broadband and are usually reflective of the advertised speed. I have the Infinity 2 package which is "up to 72mb", and I get 60-62 down over wireless, and 68-70 over wired. If you're on ethernet, I'm fairly confident you'll get 40+ on BT.

EDIT: Also yes, Engineers advice is very important, sometimes people don't realize they're throttling their own speeds. It's worth a look if your speeds are drastically lower than advertised.

Yeah, that was the package we were looking at. We ended up staying with Virgin and it turns out the reason our speeds were that much slower is because our router actually maxes out at 50, instead of 100, so they're sending a new one tomorrow. That probably means we'd get similar speeds with the BT package and we do have a period of time to cancel the Virgin and switch over, which I think we might do because my Granddad wants BT Sports which comes free with BT.

Damn that's a kicker. Were you using theirs?

As in the Virgin router? Yeah. Or if you meant using my Grandad's broadband, I live with my Grandparents.

My only problem with our Virgin router is that it has its reset button inside a small hole. So we have to use this little D&D figure to poke it when the packets start to get built up.
