For those of you that don't know lately a lot of controversy has been kicked up over some very high profile people who have allegedly committed sexual assault and/or harassment towards women(and others I assume) The most notable currently being Harvey Weinstein, a huge name in Hollywood and apparently a massive creep according to allegations from many women. This has sparked a lot more people coming out and admitting that they have been assaulted by other celebrities either recently or in the past. A lot of horrible stuff is coming to light as more and more people speak out. Personally I'm divided on this. Half of me wants to just say "Screw it, condemn them all for the hopes of a better world tomorrow" since if all these people see huge ramifications, even jail time, for their alleged actions perhaps in future we'll see a lot less men in power taking advantage of said power to assault and harass women. But the other half of me can't help but read "alleged" and feel like it's a bit much to be doing all this over supposed crimes with no proofs. To be clear, not saying this s*** doesn't happen. There's been so many references to Harvey Weinstein being a creep over the years that it's amazing it's taken this long. But the idea of punishing people over allegations doesn't sit right with me on the whole. But then let's face it, most of the c*** probably did do it. I don't think we should really shed a tear for them over the many victims that definitely will be real among the allegations. How do you feel about it? |

Should be dealt with on a case by case basis between the parties involved/the legal system. We shouldn't condemn people for little to no reason but it's good that people are feeling better about speaking out. Some attention to their case can get the wheels in motion to see if it has any merit But the real bonus imo is that would be predators will think twice now to avoid public shame. Yeah but that's the thing, legally most of these will go nowhere because half the assaults happened years ago so ultimately it will end up doing nothing if people just let it tide over. A tiny bit more awareness but it'll go back to same old same old. Hopefully victims keep speaking out, at a certain point perhaps it will be enough to see some decent consequences. Only, there will always be people who fight against them assuming everyone is lying about them so that's going to hold it back from becoming bigger than it is. Hopefully someone with tangible evidence pops up, perhaps to do with a politician. Something like that might be serious enough to get the proper attention. Who's going to defend someone that runs their government after raping people. |

It's never a black and white issue. There will always be men/women who are absolutely despicable and deserve to be called out for their actions, and then there will be women who use this as an opportunity to make up stories and spread lies about people. I haven't done much research on this particular platform, but I'm sure the crazies are out there claiming Donald Trump assaulted them again. |

Sums up my thoughts on the issue, too. Case by case basis. Where there appears to be tangible evidence of a crime being committed - it should go through the proper channels. Unfortunately, one of the downsides of "Me too" or any sort of hashtag movement, is that there'll always be people ready to take advantage of it to build a more sympathetic online persona. That's why it's probably best to remain supportive but skeptical of things you read on the Internet. |

I guarantee you we wouldn't have seen a movement like this 20 years ago. Twitter and Facebook makes people more comfortable to speak up against sexual harassment and abuse. Personally I don't really pay much attention to it, each to their own I suppose. I'm sure it's a relief to finally speak up against it. |

Yeah it's just such a shame that most of their claims hold no real weight since there's never any evidence, you just have to believe them. Condemn one person without evidence or distrust a possible victim assuming they're out for attention or misunderstood the situation. We'll never get the full context of these things so they can never really go anywhere but hopefully overall this leads to more people speaking out when there is tangible evidence. Unfortunately it's kind of inspired a witch hunt ideology so far. |
