There are different types of 'difference grades': 1. Anime and manga follow the same story board quite strictly. 2. The main story arcs of anime and manga are roughly the same', but not stricly in the details. There are notable and even sometimes important differences. 3. Anime and manga have little in common storywise, next to the main characters. I personally don't mind manga and anime being somehow different, as long as the anime-story doesn't suffer too much in quality. Grade 3: rather not, i like a little 'canon-line' between the two. What's your opinion? Does it matter to you, or not at all, as long as both ar good in their own right? |

Let's assume I enjoy the original material, in most cases that's the manga. I want the anime to be as close to the original material as it can be, with perhaps a few differences just for the sake of material. Something like Dragon Ball is going to need a little filler with extra bits added with fights and dialogue. You'd have very short fights in the anime if it adhered strictly to the manga. #3 has absolutely no reason to be used whatsoever. It's the same problem that occurred with Godzilla 1998 or Dragon Ball Evolution. If you aren't going to show an appreciation for the original material, then don't bother to put anything with it. Fullmetal Alchemist 2004 is a great example of a series done right even though its strays from the original path. By the half way point, FMA 2004 is producing its own unique story with unique characters and different takes on existing characters. However it never forgets the spirit of the original manga and shows a deep respect and understanding of both the story and characters it own unique way. There's respect given to the source material even though it strays into a different path altogether. |

I agree with you on grade 3. But there are some rare exceptions the anime is a lot different from the source material but also a lot better. The anime Garo is based on the Super Sentai-series of the same name. The anime is a lot better than the Sentai i think. the story plays in a medieval setting, other characters but the same armors as in the Sentai. There is also a manga adaptation, but i haven't read it, it would be more in a temporary setting like the original Super Sentai-series. I would recommend the anime, very nice. |

The anime has to be an adaptation, not a carbon copy. At the same time it still needs to respect source material, otherwise as previously stated you end up with a mess like Dragonball Evolution. Sailor Moon 1992 was a great example of respecting the source material but at the same time going down it's own path. Plus, filler can be really entertaining. |

I don't care about any of those, I only care if it's good. Sue me, I liked Godzilla 1998. Nothing wrong with the movie if you're not comparing it to the rest of Godzilla, it's a decent monster flick. Problems only seem to lie when you've seen what something is adapted from or inspired by. If Survival gets an anime adaptation I want it to be as good as the manga. If Inuyashiki isn't as good as the manga, I don't really care since I haven't read it and it's good in it's own right. Simply put "If it's good it's good" I don't mind if they're vastly different, unless the anime is stupidly censored compared to the manga. Like a dark and grim story such as Berserk becoming a fun adventure where nobody dies, that's BS. But a different take on the same story can be good entertainment, I see more value to that than just...seeing the same thing again? What's the point in that really? Treat each thing as it's own entity unless it's a crap entity and you need not get mad over differences. |
